I believe the best way to learn is to request to fly the smallest chopper then get someone to help you along, you will learn much faster than a tutorial. :P

As soon as I get ArmA2 I'll be helping newbies and if we play warfare styled maps, hopefully resume my standard position of Commander :P

That's cos you don't have a joystick nooblet :P And there isn't a smallest chopper in MP atm, the regular map has Mi-8s and MH-60s standard fare and Hinds and Cobras as winnable extras.

The problem with choppers atm is all the noobs are just grabbing them and doing runs straight into the zone and wrecking them.

dun need joystick to fly:D

Jostick... I raise you a cyclic, collective, and rudder pedals.

Plenty cool until the collective slips off your knee while you are on the phone and have to manage a quick grab for it to keep your full loaded UH-60 from smashing into the ground scaring all of your passengers out of their minds while simultaneously explaining to your befuddled customer why you just started unexpectedly cursing into the phone handset.

I'm just saying...

Right, on to the advice bit. I haven't actually received my copy of A2 yet as I ordered the physical shipment of the North American release but I wanted to mention something to you folks that are helping the new players get acquainted to the game that helps me when I administer on my units game servers. I just pray that it works in A2.

In A1 you could create a custom message that you could broadcast over whichever channel you were using. Most used it for playing a recorded message, or ogg sound file. But you can also use it to send very handy text messages as well.

If someone could please check and see if A2 creates an "ArmA2 other profiles" folder in your "My Documents" folder. If so then look for a folder with your player, or profile name. Inside of that folder create a folder named "sound." Should hopefully look like this example.

C:/My Documents/ArmA2 Other Profiles/Palehorse1/Sound

Inside of this folder create a "new text document" and name the document what you want your message to be. Don't actually type anything into the document itself as the title will be the message.

Here are some examples of what mine usually read.

"You are welcome to join us on teamspeak. 000.111.222.333 port 4444"

NOTE: I place the word "port" instead of the ":" because you can't have special characters in file names.

"For teamwork based play join our squad by scrolling to "status" and selecting "Team Status" and clicking "Join squad."

That one was used for domination missions and really helped as most simply did not know how to do that at all.

I'm certain that you can think of a few others that are pertinent such as "Quit driving the MHQ into the enemy occupied village and getting it blown to bits forcing the rest of us to leg it for fifty klicks you mental midget." But I digress...

Or, even a quick how to get to the battlefield via teleporting message. You are allowed to have up to nine or ten of them in A1 so I'd hope that it would be the same in A2 as well.

To actually broadcast the messages you use the "zero" button followed by another "zero" to get you into the custom radio message list. Select the message you wish to broadcast and it will be instantly typed into your current channel for you. Saves heaps of grief when piloting a transport helo through enemy AA batteries and trying to get the Teamspeak server info typed up to someone at the same time.

Could someone test this and confirm that it is/isn't available in A2 please?
Best Wishes,
Palehorse1

While I had no problems learning to fly (joystick + collective throttle makes it easy!) I've found that if you download the Little Birds mod and place one of those in the editor you can learn to fly pretty quick smart.

They're fantastic handling little things!

Okay, i've around looked in quite a few places but can't find the command to let someone know my location. That is to say something like 'I'm at 018035' or similar. Can someone please advise what this is? And that's the automated response as opposed to typing it in manually.

I'm hating it when someone says what's your location and I have no meaningful response...

Cheers in advance.

Thats an automated one i think.
What we do is just open map "m", then place a marker by Double clicking, then entering text like... "LZ"(landing zone), or "need pickup here" or what ever:)

I don't think that there is an automated responce. Just use the GPS if you have one, or learn how to read the map :)

Thanks - I can read the map... Just wondering if you can click/push a button or something and let your squad know your position. In MP, squad members automatically call out their position when they respawn it seems - especially if they respawn at the base...

When you have AI, what's the point of them saying 'What's your position' if you can't give them a meaningful reply'. In that instance, I normally look at the ground and tell them to 'move there'.

You can mark the map by double clicking. From there you can type a message for the mark (make it short), use the up and down arrows to change they type and SHIFT + up and down to change color. Press enter to finalise. What I do is make a quick mark with something like "Fry is here" and then say over chat "I'm at grid ______, marked". Also good for pointing out enemy positions and points of interest etc. Just remember that the marker will only be visisble to the people in the chat channel you are in (so everyone can see a marker placed on the global chanel, only your side on the side channel etc.).

Yeah, that's what I do too, or tell them to go to where I will be eventually to link up with them.

Please add 'right control + M brings up a mini-map', I learnt that tonight from Shin or Skenz, makes it so much easier to navigate on the fly when spawning into new territory.

Also, double-tap 'K' for compass, very helpful on long orienteering jaunts.

Good guide, I really appreciate your efforts :)

one thing that many ppl may not know
when ppl use in game voice

if you change the chat channel it changes the voice channel acordingly

so if you are in a squad and change it to squad / group chat, you can talk away and the only ppl that hears you is the ppl in that group
same goes for vehicle chat, etc etc

vehicle chat is especially usefull when tanking, or any multi crewd vehicles

oh and another tip
if you need an admin for help with trouble makers or even mission restart / change come into the games.on.net IRC channel

also games.on.net arma admins are:
Skenz
Shinanigans
Ball0fire

AT Tips?

- try to shoot the vehicle from the rear where the Armour is weakest
- arm your AT and fire from cover, or run out, shoot, run back, don't stick around, the flight time of the missile could see you shot by your target
- If the only shot you have is side or front on aim for the turret/base of the cannon. taking away the weapons just turns it into a big heavy bus and makes it a safer target to deal with with subsequent shots or by someone else

- Practice in the editor with the different types of AT, guide/unguided
- Practice practice practice!! jump in the editor, place some empty tanks at varying distances and trial each AT class, friend and foe!! as you will most likely need to use an enemies. Once your happy, put down enemy filled tanks and try again with them shooting back!
- Practice shooting at different parts of the tank to determine the best shot to damage output of your chosen weapon/target

- in Arma1 the M136 seemed to drop a bit so the aiming mark with the iron sight was a little below the mark, moving the sight slightly above your target at close range <100m and higher overlarger distances. seemed to work best

- Haven't tested the minimum rang on the javelin yet but I would save this for distance targets as the flight angle of the rocket goes up then down, not good for CQB, save it for targets >150m

im sure there are plenty more others can add :D

West;
I use the SMAW with HEAA (Anti Armour). You can carry 3 SMAW's on most classes as well as your main weapon which makes them pretty handy for long trecks and dud shots. I think two of them into the side of any tank will get the crew to bail. The HEDP (Dual Purpose) is more for infantry insta-gibbing.

East;
I use the Metis. This thing is like a baby Javelin and it's really fun to use. It's got the whole missile release, drop, thrust & go animation that just looks so cool. I'm yet to throw one of these lock-on bad boys into armour and not have the crew bail. Unlike the Javelin, which will pretty much decimate anything it hits from a ridiculous range, it's a bit more compact, easier to use and there's more ammo available than the Jav.

I HATE the RPG-7. Every time i use it i miss at least once because every time i use it the technique that i used last time fails! It has massive amount of drop and unless you use the VR rockets it takes 3 rockets to incap anything of decent size. Haven't used much other than those listed here. Still experimenting with the Metis then i'll move on to the other RPG's :D
