EVE Online Devs Talk Innovation in MMOs

Unread postby News Portal » 27 Jun 12, 2:26 pm

About a month ago, PC Gamer published an interview with Matt Firor, the game director for The Elder Scrolls Online, in which he said, "At this point in the evolution of MMOs, every MMO has tried something at one point or another that you’re going to do in your game. There aren’t any more truly innovative features."

Now, the EVE Online devs, Kristoffer Touberg and Jon Lander, are hitting back. "If I ever said that, Jon should fire me," Touberg said. Lander then added, in reference to their upcoming EVE tie-in, Dust 514, "I’ll be honest: nobody in the world has ever mixed a PlayStation game with a PC game, where you can interact with each other in the game world and shoot each other in a third-person-style sci-fi spaceship game and a first-person shooter. If that’s not unique I don’t know what it is." Check out the full interview over here.

I dunno I'm not impressed unless you can play their new MMO on the PC. Infact why not intergrate it into EVE?

That would be innovative. But right now it's a space mmorpg and a fps mmorpg as seperate games, I can't really call that innovative.

In a way the elder scrolls person is correct, or rather bringing out new content is easier, but eve which always tries to bring out new features is harder, just look at the captains room thing which is a new feature but it was useless. how many new features can you add before you start adding useless ones.

After playing EVE for 4 years, and leaving recently.

My thoughts are that they haven't innovated in years.

Same old ****, time in time out.

Whatever the EVE devs are doing, someone saying that everything has been done and it's now impossible to innovate is mind bogglingly short sighted, and smells like an attempt to justify the Elder Scrolls MMO being genericy mcgenericpants.

It's like that guy from the US patent office who said "Everything that can be invented has been invented." in 1899...
