Read the articles, the actual content of the articles. Generally the reviewers don't just make **** up ("there's a 50 foot tall sea monster in GTAIV, keep an eye out for it!1"), so read and make a more informed decision based off what the reviewer discusses about the game and what YOU want out of a game, not whether the article has big bold quotes like "it was awesome!1!". Find out WHY it's awesome, if the article doesn't explain it, move on to the next one.

Exactly. There are a lot of fanboi/hater tainted scores on metacritic. Do some reading about what people enjoy about the game and what people dislike about the game. I've found many fantastic games with metacritic ratings around 50-60 so I steer clear of the overall score completely.

You get people rating a game 0 just because it didn't work properly on their system or even just because it's a contender against one of their favourite games that they would rather promote. While some are rating it 10 just because it has a lower score than they think it deserves which just throws the whole point of the rating system out the window.

On the article though, why wouldn't any developer like to see all their games rated 90+? 90+ generally guarantees that anybody with a 'mainstream' interest is going to enjoy it and hence bring in the maximum amount of profits.

This needs repeating.
