EVE Online Exploiters Receive Comeuppance

Unread postby News Portal » 29 Jun 12, 4:26 pm

Not long ago, as you may remember, five EVE Online players exploited their way to five trillion ISK. Now, after a little time investigating the situation, CCP Games have released a statement outlining the debacle and the players punishments.

Punishment is perhaps too strong a word as the players did, eventually, report the exploit (after a fortnight of making themselves trillionaires). As such, their accounts will remain in good standing, but they will have all their new-found riches confiscated as. While market manipulation is a part of the game, CCP have ruled that what they did was still technically an exploit, and therefore unlawful.

I don't agree with that... they played people within the game... I see no "crime" or "exploit"

I agree.

Life is full of people who exploit their situation to their own gains.
If EVE is trying to be a virtual "reality" then surely the mistakes of CCP shouldn't be taken out on those that take advantage of them.

I guess if there were hundreds of people who used the exploit I'd feel different, but 5 sounds like "normal life" where you might have a few multi billionaires.

I'm with you on this, it was within the game and this sort of thing happens in real life too. Only no company is stupid enough to make a rewards program worth that much...

There is a difference between an exploit of intended mechanics and an exploit of unintended mechanics, even if they were overlooked by CCP. This kind of thing has happened in WoW recently where people could roll multiple times on "looking for raid" gear, and everyone was in uproar about it because people from well known guilds got banned.

punishment is a bit strong, for revealing the exploit the leader was compensated using their PLEX for snitches program.

I love seeing this kind of creativity, i think CCP does as well.

Well If you are going to relate it to real life, the only way to destroy your own possessions for profit is by insuring them (somehow for more then they are worth) Which equates to insurance fraud which I don't think I need to explain how illegal it is.
