Ahh yes, the old hacker accusations. Having been both an accuser and a receiver of such claims it really does come down to how butt-hurt you are (and if you ask Cozi, emp, Stu etc they know I seem to be fairly butt hurt most of the time...).

Also comes down to how lucky people get. I was spraying a chopper with an assault rifle in BF3 the other night, just some passing fire as it made a sweep. Bam, pilot falls out, choppers hits the deck and I'm left chuckling to myself for such a random shot.

Sometimes people just get lucky....

Resulting in the victim feeling pretty butt hurt after a while :B

I find it also depends a lot on how skill-based the game is, the more personal player skill it takes to be good, the harder it is to spot a cheater as opposed to someone who is just good at the game.

In a particular MMO that has very player skill based PvP I've been told that I have more support tickets accusing me of hacking then any other player but I've never even tried to find a hack for that game much less tried using one.

I get accused of hacking as Sniper in TF2 a lot. Try to take it as a compliment. It takes a lot of time and effort to be good enough to seem too good.

I'm with Long John. Work takes up so much time in the day, by the time I get home I just wanna playing relaxing games (Anno 2070, Magic the gathering etc) games that don't rush me.
How I envy the guys that have all day to game. I wish I could do that.. but annual leave only lets me do that 4 weeks of a year :(

Many moons ago I played a significant amount of Action Quake/ CS / Day of Defeat. I'm not the best FPS player in the world but I am far from the worst. After so long with the attitude of "maybe they are just way better than me" I set up aim bot / wall hacks for CS / BF 1942 and came to one fundamental conclusion:

At least 80% of the people you think are hackers are.

It was astonishing to have wall hacks and aim bots on and be able to watch people react to other players in ways that they just could not have done if they weren't hacking. It fundamentally changed my view of FPS games from "man that guys good" to "wonder where he got his hacks from".

As a more recent anecdote a four month flirtation with APB did nothing but reinforce this belief. You could cut out the middle man in that game by just banning all gold ranked players. The name and shame lists they released (release?) were just a cavalcade of "Yep that guy was a hacker thought so".

One of the reasons I am looking forward so much to Planetside 2 is that nothing diffuses their effect like extreme numbers. IN the first PS you still got hackers but one guy hacking in a base assault is a non issue. In a standard 2v2 APB mission that one guy hacking means you are guaranteed to lose.

I used to get called for hacking in cod4 back in the day, by noobs I suppose.

Watching footage of those bf3 hacks linked from that reddit post is almost sickening though (at least it would be if I had caved in with my boycott... never! :P ). I don't understand why people would do it?

i've hit a jet with my unguided tank shell, travelling full speed, from about 2km away in bf3 on oman... it was glorious! Whenever I come accross frustrating fps moments i think back to that time and im happy again hehe

Back when I was working I still managed to get in around 5 hours of gaming a night :P

Just about how you plan your time really.

bf3 is so good when cashing in your k/d ratio for comedy. half the time you get an awesome kill out of it too.
using headphones and being aware of the map's trends really helps. also luck. some days you just have a few incredible matches in a row and so much of that is just being in the right place at the right time, being ready and aware of everything.

I saw one guy using a speedhack, it was just so stupidly obvious, and he wasn't even that good. His motion would be like:
Code: Select all
. . .       .       .        .       . . .
But then the other team would kill him anyway.

I also played Modern Warfare 3 on the free weekend with a friend who thought it was fun to hack for some reason. It just made the game pointless for everyone.

i played bf3 on the double xp weekend. there was 48 of us on the new CQ map steelworks. one player on the server, by the name of "||||||||||||||" plus or minus a few lines, had a k/d of 325/5, and a score of 30-40000. 30-40 THOUSAND. it was total BS. he was using aimbot and wallhack. obviously no one is that good and the whole server was raging, even his team. there needs to be votekick implemented, vote kick resulting in a few hours server ban. just wrecks the game. but yeh, the article is right, sometimes u cant tell. that time was easy.

i never accuse anyone of hacking bf3, but when i played crysis 2 religiously i always was. something very suss about that game, i think the lack of any pb/vac didnt help.

Crysis 2 was the most hilariously easy game to hack ever - you could give yourself infinite energy simply by editing a text file...

I have really bad memories of CSS hackers but at least that eventually games on net servers got decent anti hacking protection and lots of hackers got kicked before even being able to play. I see hackers here and there but in my experience the number has declined..........or maybe I just don't play the modern MP FPS.

Every now and then though they don't cover their tracks. There was a bloke on BF3 today that was killing the whole opposing team from their spawn -_-
