Valve Appoints In-House Virtual Economist

Unread postby News Portal » 17 Jun 12, 9:48 am

Valve are getting serious about their in-game economies as they leapfrog off the back of Team Fortress 2's hat-driven model and into the world of DotA 2. As such, they've seen fit to hire their own in-house economist: a man by the name of Yanis Varoufakis. According to Yanis, Valve's opening line in an email to him went as follows: "We are running into a bunch of problems as we scale up our virtual economies, and as we link economies together," wrote Gabe. "Would you be interested in consulting with us?"

Yanis describes his new role at Valve as a dream come true, saying "Think of it: An economy where every action leaves a digital trail, every transaction is recorded; indeed, an economy where we do not need statistics since we have all the data!" You can read more of Yanis' excitement over at his new company blog.

Maybe an internal accountant can drill into Gabe's head that Australians buying our game keys elsewhere due to ridiculous price gouging = no money for valve.

the good thing is that we can basically opt out though, and play good games for free.

Wouldn't be a broken record response if people actually read it properly the first time.

I'd never thought about virtual economies being a sandbox heaven for economists.

Hmmm.... World of Chartered Accounting anyone?

Like he wrote in his blog, Eve hired an inhouse economist years ago, who has helped CCP manage any changes to the ingame market that won't disrupt the economy. He was very useful when PI was added.

He *does* seem quite excited about all this. But I suppose I would be too, if I were him.
