Consoles Are Going Extinct, Says David Jaffe

Unread postby News Portal » 16 Jun 12, 9:50 am

David Jaffe, game designer behind such titles as Twisted Metal and the God of War franchise, believes consoles are on the way out and all-in-one TVs with an integrated streaming system are the next step in gaming evolution. "I'll go on the record and say that the next generation of hardware will be the last consoles. And they should be," Jaffe told Games Industry International. "It doesn't mean you won't buy a piece of hardware from Sony, but you'll probably buy a television that streams the stuff," he added, "I'll be able to stream in the next Uncharted and Plants vs. Zombies, and you won't even think about it."

No thanks, Australias internet is too **** for this kinda of thing, and i doubt they would put servers in australia to reduce lag.

Is it possible to dumb down gaming any more than this?

you don't want to know...

how is it 'dumbed down'? I dont think you understand what hes saying. Its not a new way to game, its going to be a new way to deliver those games. You wont be going to eb games to buy a disc with data on it, instead it will like turning on a tv, and selecting what to play, and bam, instant gaming.

Something like that won't be here in Australia for a while, at least until our infrastructure is improved.

The only thing worth "streaming in" is a you tube video. Unless you like the idea of "smart tv" acting as window into past in which case this is a great idea because you could constantly view what had taken place in the game up to 5 seconds ago. I think MattyB and Jaffe are both sharing a one bedroom flat together on CLOUD 9.

That has a problem though...

it means you have to integrate the processing power and storage system (and everything else needed to process it) into the TV, which drives up the cost of the TV (even if the customer may not exactly be looking for a console and just a TV).

while streaming it live like game streaming services bypass this problem but introduces the latency issue which removes the possibility of a good chunk of the games right now from being played optimally under common network infrastructure.

The issue with this is the fact that I have multiple consoles connected to my TV. What happens when this is the case? I have to buy a Sony TV to play Sony games and then another TV to play Microsoft games?

that will be the second problem that render the idea moot...

between that and the increased cost per unit of the TV resulting from the inclusion of the unit into the TV itself, i can't see it being justified by the consumer giants.

streaming live of course bypass that, but then you come face first to the latency issue.

I dont think latency will be a huge issue, NVidia's GRID network already has latency lower then a console to tv.. and i think that was on a tv :P

The problem will be more of what was raised above; with it all being integrated does this mean it will need to be a monopoly on distribution? Or completely freeware design...

I don't think this is really how it's going to end up after the next generation of consoles. I think something like this is way off in the future.

There are so many things that need to be improved upon, like our Internet service here in Australia, latency issues, and so on. And people are right, the average consumer is not going to be excited about high priced TVs, when that's not really what they'd be buying them for.

Not to mention there is Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo who all have their business built around us buying their hardware and software. And the retail businesses who live off people buying this hardware. They would all be fighting to keep a system going where they can survive like this.

Going the way of streaming just limits the distribution options. And with less competition in the market it just doesn't seem like we would benefit.
