Blackfoot Studios Aiming to ''Restore PC Gaming to its Former Glory'' With 'Ground Branch'

Unread postby News Portal » 16 Jun 12, 9:49 am

Ex-developers from the teams behind Rainbow Six, Rogue Spear and Ghost Recon have formed a new studio - Blackfoot Studios - and are now asking for help with a Kickstarter to get their new title, an FPS called Ground Branch. Set to provide a tactical FPS that does away with the "rinse-repeat gameplay of today’s so called ‘Tactical Shooters’", the game is being developed with input from US Special Operations Command and is intended to almost ridiculously realistic, with an "organic" design approach that mimics the capabilities of a real life soldier down to the smallest detail. They're asking for $425,000, so if that sounds like your thing, maybe head on over.

They will already be missing the mark if its 'map based' [ala all the other shooters like from rogue spear to BF3] and the maps aren't able to be dynamically generated so every time you play its a new map.

Thats where FPS should be with today's level of technology.

either that or a procedurally generated 'earth' where a map can be any X sized area on the planet from arctic wastes to big cities to some desert, jungle or temperate forest.

While i somewhat agree that that would be great, with a small dev team such as this, i don't think it's on the radar. Their forums did have a massive thread on randomly generated missions though a while back. I don't think lack of content will be an issue though. There's already a handful of user created maps (without the game being close to release) and with full mod support planned, this number will only grow.

The problem is that we don't need yet another generic FPS with mod support, we have those already.
What we need is games companies who'll take their chosen genera to the next level tech-wise, not companies who'll rehash the same **** over and over.

The developers aren't (for what i understand) trying to revolutionize the whole FPS genre. They're trying to create a game that a large community has been crying out for since Ghost Recon. The tact/sim community. While Arma is great, it doesn't have the ability to be good with CQB. Revolutionizing a genre techwise is fantastic, but i'd rather have great gameplay than a game/tech experiment. That being said, this might be something you're interested in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxBSYit49c8

I already funded a similar game to this genre so I wont jump to pledge money however it looks like they may be able to pull it off better with some ex-ghost recon devs the task will be a bit easier.

Yeah I've seen starforge but their engine is in many ways not even as good as wurmonline.

Starforge.. i stopped my interest mostly after
1. It was unplayable on my rig.(insta-crash/1fps)
2. I saw log files of them compiling the game on a laptop.
3. I saw the unity Logo. (Unity can go suck a bag of...)

This would be totally sweet, but there are so many complications and bugs that could be game breaking... But its still an awesome idea. Maybe a few more years.

Also.. I want to believe in ground branch.. But i can't.. just can't..

The idea being to be able to make planet sized maps without having to handcraft every single part of it from scratch, not so much make a new on the fly every time a person starts the game.

I have a lot of ideas on how to make it work well, but this would be a very long post if I got into the details ;)
