E3 2012: Hands-On With Crysis 3

Unread postby News Portal » 9 Jun 12, 12:47 pm

Crytek are really trying to change things with [app=8844]Crysis 3[/app], keen to show that their game can be more than just a glorified tech demo or a benchmarking tool. Jacob Saylor activated his camo suit and ghosted into the Liberty Dome to go hands-on.

Given Crytek's record, Crysis 3 will have over 9000 DRM schemes active. We all know how much their CEO loves to **** about piracy.
DRM is like kids. The less you have, the better.

What can a bow an arrow offer that a silenced sniper rifle at the top of a valley can't?

Actual silence. Silencers are still rather noisy, and they wear out after a few shots, especially on more powered weapons.

Hm, was never a problem in Crysis 1. Suddenly it's an unresolved issue in Crysis 3 that needs immediate attention with a supposed game-changing bow? Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I thought you were talking in general...

Most games get silencers completely wrong.

If a game wants to be realistic, a 'silenced' high powered sniper rifle still makes a lot of noise.

Also if you're going to get technical, the more correct term is "suppressor".

While the bow does still drain your energy if you use it in cloak, it's nowhere near as much as any other weapon, including silenced/suppressed ones. But it also depends on the string draw weight, we have 3 modes which defines different characteristics of the bow and one of those is how much energy you use while cloaked and firing it.

Thanks for the kind words, Jacob! Glad to see you liked it :)

On the whole Silencers Vs Bow
I once read that even a Silenced pistol makes as much noise as a chainsaw or an ambulance siren...Thats a **** load of noise [They are actually called Supressors but whatev's]
After firing a couple of handguns myself, [none with silencers on though] I have no doubt that even a SUPPRESSED Assault rifle would be loud as ****.

The noise from the discharge of the round can be supressed quite a bit. Its the bullet breaking the sound barrier as it leaves the muzzle that cannot be silenced. Using sub sonic rounds is generally the solution to this but then this limits the range quite a bit. Just to be uber specific :)

Even suppressed it's still over 100dB, which is approaching the level of a chainsaw/drill/concert.

I was just remarking that a silencer can't get close to the low noise of a bow. :P
