Launch First, Optimise Later: Dark Souls for PC Will Be Straight Port

Unread postby News Portal » 7 Jun 12, 3:07 pm

From Software underestimated the time it would take to port Dark Souls to PC, Producer Daisuke Uchiyama revealed. "Because we wanted to get the PC version out as soon as possible, it's more strictly a port from the console version," Uchiyama said. "We haven't been able to step up into doing any specific optimisation for PC."

Uchiyama also apolgised for frame rate problems in areas like Blighttown, but mentioned that these will not be fixed in the PC version. "In Japan there's not much of a PC market and we haven't really taken into consideration that audience before. That's one of the reasons why we haven't been able to step up on the PC platform until now."

And the cycle continues.

If you're going to port a console game to PC, do it right (like Alan Wake) or don't waste your time.

It doesn't say in the article that they plan to patch the PC game later with optomisations.

And that's the exact reason why ports from console to PC get a bad rap.

If they don't have a PC product why release a PC product? They're going to do more harm than good.

most likely because their publisher are not exactly going to wait beyond the agreed date of release.

why not set it later in the first place? well one would be that they probably didn't exactly estimate the time frame needed correctly, and the second would be that their publishers probably aren't going to be as keen the later the date goes.

Well at least they admitted it, I admire that.
If its playable, I'll enjoy it.

based on current pc tech to xbox 360, I think the dark souls players will be fine.

really excited for this, not the pc version, I already have it on ps3, so many new players...many more victims for the darkwraiths (me.)

What's the bet they release a shoddy port, then blame poor sales on piracy and never look at PC again.

That said.. i'm still buying this once it's available on Steam.

Heh, definitely admirable

I may or may not enjoy it... but I most certainly won't pay for it. There's no way in hell I'd consider this sort of thing.

But it wont be a bad port....I play it on xbox and the stuttering is more then managable and is all because of hardware which makes me think that it will run fine on most PC's.

They still have my money and many other peoples money, the stuttering on xbox didnt stop me from buying it and either will less stuttering on PC.

uh-oh. there are direct-x calls that are specific to the xbox 360 in order to speed things up. the pc version will actually be worse in some areas. it makes me scared when he says things like "look, its a straight port, nothing is going to be fixed and really, you should be happy we're doing this at all because we don't even have a big pc market in japan". This one is going to be notorious
