CD Projekt Red's New RPG is 'Cyberpunk'

Unread postby News Portal » 31 May 12, 9:30 am

CD Projekt Red's long-teased new IP is very close to sci-fi - in fact, it's cyberpunk. Not just the genre either, but the actual pen-and-paper tabletop RPG of the same name, with the original game's creator, Mike Pondsmith, working alongside the team on the adaptation. The game is set to feature all the hallmarks of CDP's Witcher series, including a "complex and gripping narrative" and a non-linear story. Click here to see the game's first teaser images.

should be epic. I'd hazard a guess it will be using the Witcher 2 engine, hopefully updated with DX11 etc so should look sweet

Awesome, Cyberpunk was the first pen & paper I played back in my teens, many many hours of ridiculous combats, everyone wanted a Solo with Combat Sense 10, and how much cyber could you cram in your body before you went psychotic! I even had a cybernetic rottweiller for a pet. Memorrriieesssss...

Can't wait to see how this develops.

More cyberpunk is excellent, such an interesting genre.

Really curious to see what type of gameplay will be offered though. Third or first person? Quicktime events or not? Branching plot? More significant player choices and subtle plot? I'm confident CDPR can nail most of those important elements.

I will be interested to see how much difference in character build and play style will be possible. In The Witcher you are shoehorned into playing the same character and pretty much the same playstyle (with some slight modifications) so it will be interesting to see if this goes in a different direction in that regard.

I've been thinking about that actually. The choice of either giving a well developed character for the player to control, or letting the player create his own character who will then be forced into the predetermined plot. Geralt I feel works well in The Witcher, he adds interest to the game. It might be easier for me to feel like I literally AM the protagonist if it was a character I've created to suit me, but then you'd lose the charm that comes with Geralt. The choice would also affect how the game is designed in some sections with regard to player choices / freedoms.

Different options work for different games/plots though. Maybe this game will designed to for user created protagonists.

I can't think of many RPGs where the characters actually felt different. Mass Effect classes played mostly the same. Dragon Age had different classes but not a lot of variation within each class. Elder Scrolls tends towards homogenisation by virtue of the ability to learn just about everything on a single character. The fallouts have perks, but they don't affect the basic playstyle of see a group of enemies, shoot/hit till they die.

GIVE TO NEMMY.

I've never played the Pen and Paper Cyberpunk, but I've played a LOT of Shadowrun - my runner has been kicking on for a campaign thats been running four, nearly five years so far. The universe is the thing that appeals most to me, and even if its not Shadowrun, this is definitely enough for me to want so hard my eyeballs are on the verge of asploding.

Hopefully this will be Deus Ex: HR without the highly linear gameplay and not-really-open world.

This makes me very very wet, being a big fan of Cyberpunk settings such as Ghost in the Shell, Deus Ex etc.
I'd be interested in seeing what direction CDprojektRed take this having come from making only fantasy setting games, especially interested in what they'll do with the Red engine in a city environment.
