NVidia Announces 'GeForce Grid', Streaming Cloud Service Powered by Kepler GPUs

Unread postby News Portal » 16 May 12, 11:45 am

NVidia have announced their new 'GeForce Grid' service, which partners with cloud gaming providers Gaikai to deliver what Nvidia are claiming as a mere ten millisecond latency between input/output. Is it viable for Australians? Probably not, but the technology is fascinating, and NVidia are all-systems-go behind it. Upcoming indie mech shooter Hawken is going to be one of the first titles offered on the service, and was demonstrated being played on a server 10 miles away with zero visible lag.

sure does show the power of the system! up there with the old Xbox tech demos at cons actually running on PCs. Misleadment!

Full cloud gaming is never going to be viable for Australia due to the fact that we're pretty much isolated from the rest of the world.

I wouldn't say never. Technology is amazing.

Having said that I'd personally rather have my own PC doing the work.

10 miles? that's like 16 kilometers, Phwooooooaarrrr mister that's swell! Now if I only i live within that range of, well, anything.

Cheek aside, the technology for it does seem quite interesting and in high density areas could be a winner.

it'll be viable when the hardware and bandwidth are cheap enough/easy enough to manage for them to just bang them into server rooms everywhere

until they stick a server in every capital city of australia... then it could be viable for about 15% of australians!

statistic completely made up

Indeed (re: made up statistic). :)

Picking the major cites with more than 1M inhabitants in urban areas (aka the important ones):
Sydney + Melbourne + Brisbane + Perth + Adelaide ()
= 3.6M + 3.4M + 1.7M + 1.3M + 1M = 11M
NB: 2006 census

Total population of Australia: 22.9M (2012)
or 19.9M (in 2006) to keep the calculations consistent

So 5 servers (farms) would cover 55% of Australians.

Not half bad for just 5 server farms. Have been waiting for something like this to catch on, has been talked about for quite some time in other areas.

Be lucky to get one server in syd and maybe one in melb.. why would they care about the rest of the country given low pop ?

ten millisecond latency between input/output

If they're saying it takes 10ms to get calculations done [ie: the time it takes between information in to get information out]then that is very slow.

that doesn't even count network latency.

Cloud gaming won't ever be truly viable (unless you actually live near the server, maybe 10 miles away perhaps? ;) ) unless scientists discover true instantaneous transmission.

Just for the sake of interest, what do you think will happen to our pings/latency IF the NBN goes as planned and we all wind up with Fiber to the home. I realize that some of the hops will still be pretty substantial, but it's interesting to speculate nonetheless.
