Treyarch Defend Black Ops II Engine

Unread postby News Portal » 15 May 12, 2:47 pm

Treyarch have come out swinging against detractors of the Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 engine, saying that a total overhaul wasn't necessary. "I think the questions are valid," said Mark Lamia to One of Swords. The answer may not need to be an entirely new engine, but you might need to do an entire overhaul of your entire lighting system. The trick is, we’re not willing to do that if we can’t keep it running at 60 frames per second — but we did that this time." If you haven't already, you can check out the Black Ops 2 trailer right here.

It looks old and tired and doesn't separate itself from previous games. If I was a games reviewer I'd kind of just dismiss it on that alone because they're not trying to make it look different (not to mention that the game play itself has barely changed in 7 games).

In his analogy you're just just making it go from white walls to beige walls, you have to tear out the 19th century plumbing, replace odd electrical cabling and sometimes tear down old foundations and rebuild them - not because you want a brand new house, but because you want your house to be up to date and modern on the inside, not just aesthetically - but his "house" doesn't even look new. It looks old. And it feels old and they're just putting plaster over holes in the walls instead of fixing them.

It looks **** disgusting... just further proof COD is more about money than true design.

The only time you'll see a new engine is when the next gen consoles come out, when the mainstream market / regular Joe would expect it to look better.

minimum effort maximum reward = COD games.

Cant image playing an FPS that doesn't have the graphics, sound, physics, destruction and atmosphere of BF3... not to mention the battlelog which really is great.

MW3 was also horribly optimised for PC, the default graphics settings were simply inexcusable in that they stretched textures to fit the resolution unless you specified otherwise, I believe.

This.

My stepdad plays pretty much just the COD games when they come out, takes him a couple weeks to get enough time to play SP then he just dabbles in the Old Farts matches on MP a couple of times a month,

I showed him the Trailer for BO2 and he was like Wow it just keeps getting better and better graphics.

I tried to show him Crysis and some other Crytek games with better graphics but he just isn't willing to go beyond COD.
I suspect alot of people who play COD dont play many other games.

I was really surprised at just how bad it was.. I felt like I was playing a game made 4 or 5 years ago, not a relatively recent release :/

When I saw the trailer at first I thought it was a spoof.

"Call of Duty - NOW WITH ROBOTS AND HORSES!"

Although the franchise has been a big awful joke for years.

My COD hate is top tier, though I like to keep it quiet to avoid sounding like a broken record and the rest of the herd..

the truth is..

it's actually a shame. Cod 1 blew my mind for story telling back then, Cod 2 was a fantastic MP game, Cod 4 could quite possible be my favourite MP of all time (it's hard to seperate CS, BF2 and this.. each have there days). WAW was okay but this is when I got tired.

It is a shame that it cant go beyond. If the gameplay of COD remained, with maybe idTECH5 (since cod is idTECH3), physics based gameplay (broken cover and such).. I would be back to loving it immensely. Given that they also give dedicated servers with mods so killstreaks could be taken out and I can still play Snd.

^but this is all to much to ask of the "modern day cod".

I wonder what 'Respawn' will do??

It's funny their target is 60fps. If they used an engine that wasn't say a decade old, they'd probably find it easier to have much greater graphical quality and still keep 60fps. It'd be no Crysis, but then actually Crysis 2 ran 60FPS fine...

Excuses for old engine tech with the highest grossing game worldwide for the last 3 years (at least) is pretty pathetic.

Is the issue that it doesn't look good or that it runs bad?

Quick google image search suggests to me the game isn't "ugly" by any means...

theres basically 2 types of gamers, gamers who decry cod as everything evil about modern gaming, and those that play cod and nothing else. i like to think of myself in the lesser known 3rd category... the ones that think cod is ok, theres worse games, theres better games, theres no use arguing with either extreme because theyre both blinded by their own entitlement to vent their opinion.

I liked CoD up until 4, though I liked the feel they had of America being invaded by the Russians in MW2... that being said I can only enjoy that pace of action for 30 minutes before I get mentally exhausted (bored). There's just too much shooting and action to keep me interested. And, of course, on top of that CoD4 and MW2 felt almost identical in almost all gameplay aspects, so did WaW, Black Ops and MW3. The series hasn't changed and doesn't have that pacing that, if I recall correctly, the first game had.
