''I didn’t want any sense of balance at all. I wanted it to be an anti-game'': Dean 'Rocket' Hall on Day Z (Part 1)

Unread postby News Portal » 15 May 12, 10:01 am

The open-world, persistent zombie wasteland mod Day Z has taken the internet by storm. We sat down with its creator, Dean 'Rocket' Hall to discuss how the mod got this far, why Day Z proves ArmA is a great game, and the possibility of a stand-alone Day Z title.

That's really what hit me. Waking up on a beach with a pistol I didn't know the power of, flares I didn't know how to use, no map, no compass, no idea where I was or what was around me. The sense of desperation and isolation. And you better believe when I saw my first zombie I emptied multiple clips into him out of sheer panic, quickly realising I was going to end up out of ammo I ran away and hid. At that time our server had glitched and wasn't spawning items so I spent hours with my remaining few clips. Looking forward to part 2!

so glad diablo is out today - can't afford the $20 for op arrowhead at the moment - bring on the steam mid-year sales!

The whole concept sounds great. It would be glorious to see players, out of their own effort, making a safe area for newbies, for trading.. enforcing their own laws, without the game forcing you to holster your weapon in certain areas. The possibilities.. As he says, emergent gameplay. As above, bring on the steam sales!
What can change the nature of a man?

Arma 2 by itself is worth far more then the $20 asking price (combined ops is what you want btw)

As Rocket said in the article, many of the features people love about Day Z are stock parts of Arma 2. Pick it up, grab a friend or two to play some community co-op missions or jump on a server and go nuts.

Can't recommend the game (or series) enough, i'm ecstatic to see more copies of arma 2 selling, the developers deserve it.

Honestly it has a sense of Stalker about it. At least, at the beginning stages but even more difficult and survivor based. After a few more patches I think ill buy the game just for this mod.
You all saw it! That Orphanage tried to burn me down first!

The whole mod could do with a overhaul, it's a great concept but pretty poorly executed and buggy.

2 full australian servers, total pitch black nights, zombies running through walls, the list goes on.

I'm hoping that zombie game Class 3, and Class 4 the MMO from Undead Labs deliver more.

I agree. There are tonnes of other mods for the game that add in lots of new military forces, islands, campaigns, missions and that tweak/alter gameplay and even improve on the games sounds and visual effects. You are almost limitless in the amount of variety you can have.

yeah, sorry I should've clarified i have ARMA 2 vanilla - just not the Op Arrowhead pack - hence not wanting the combined ops pack :)

was listening to friends playing DayZ on mumble last night - classic moments of general chatter then frantic screaming overlaying my own Dungeon Defenders game... was very surreal. can't wait to play it :)

Pitch blakc nights is a feature, not a bug, there is no electricity, and it tends to get very dark when there is total cloud coverage. It's not always that dark, depends on the weather/moon cylces etc. Either find somewhere to hole up at night, or scavenge for flares/chemlights during the day.

And yeah, it's an Alpha release.

Given the darkness and night and lack of electricity.. I would LOVE to see some underground bunkers/cellars etc with petrol generators all that can be used but of course sparingly/with a posse. else risk giving away location given their noise.
You can imagine being lost at night and see some lights/hear a generator running be instantly loured to what will probably be death anyway.

Generating some electricity could also be used for some pretty powerful features such as charging cordless powertools, batteries, crafting and so forth.

Heaps of potential, great start! Good luck.

One thing I hate about mods.. particularly with ARMA, is that they're usually a complete pain in the **** to install and make work. Anyone having problems with DayZ at all, other than the constant updates?
