I can understand the people who say "i don't care about the cover or the marketing, i just care about the game" and although this is a good attitude to have, i think you do have to consider this: when the creators of a game make these sort of decisions for the game (even if they only superficially effect the marketing) this has a major effect on the expectations of the people who are buying it. when you sex up something... more people buy it. more people who wouldn't have otherwise. so now after this, you have a new customer base that you need to keep happy. So the marketing of an object actually has just about as much power over the definition of the object: just as much as the creative process does. in fact, it could be more influential because its the marketing that brings in the money. and the big guys up top have to follow the money.
