Convince Diablo Doubters With Diablo III: Starter Edition

Unread postby News Portal » 14 May 12, 11:05 am

We all have that friend that we keep trying to convince that the Diablo franchise is amazing, but they're all Baldur's Gate this and Titan Quest that. Now, thanks to Blizzard, we can show rather than tell, with the Diablo III: Starter Edition and Guest Passes. Each copy of the game will come with Guest Passes the buyer can give to friends in order for them to try out a limited version of the game. The new convert can then upgrade their game to the full version when they see the light. The Starter Edition will also be available to those without Guest Passes, but not until 30 days after release.

Awesome. I know just the person to inflict one of my guest passes on. :D
Good to see them showing confidence in the game like this. There's actually some competition in the "isometric" action rpg space this year, hopefully this will get people to try D3.

So I wonder what they could call this amazing new idea?

Maybe "Demo"?

Demo = Free to Play Model
2 Players on one console = Couch Co-op
Remote Storage = Cloud Storage
Expansion Pack = DLC

This list of ridiculous buzz words go on.

They have been doing the guest pass system since WOW, then they did it for SC2, would be strange for them to keep diablo out of the loop.

Effectively the same as the beta but cannot group with those who have the full version.
Players on Starter Edition game licenses have the following restrictions:

Act I up to the Skeleton King is available
Level 13 cap
Matchmaking available only with other Starter Edition players
No Real Money Auction House access

I don't mind Diablo, played D1 and D2 enough, but even a "starter edition" of D3 is not enough to get me interested in D3 - for me there are just better games out there to spend my time playing *shrug*

You came to this conclusion after playing it?

I don't feel the need to defend Diablo3, but this kind of statement is ludicrous without having played the game. You are potentially missing out on a lot of personal enjoyment by writing off a game before trying it.

I've read most of the whinges about D3, again from a lot of people who've never played it, and to be honest I don't recall experience a single problem during beta. I wasn't set on buying D3 before the open weekend, but its been an agonising wait since.

Not really.
They are just saying that even after hearing all about it, they aren't feeling interested. Which I guess means advertising fail.
And now I think about, what have they even advertised other than "diablo 3, buy it'?

I expect they're relying a lot more on reviews and word of mouth. Diablo is kindof just Diablo, so reviews will be important to showcase the similarities and differences.

Erm, they've had trailers running. Even on TV. Plenty of advertising out there for the game.
