Valve and Blizzard Make Nice on DotA Name

Unread postby News Portal » 13 May 12, 11:36 am

Valve and Blizzard have finally laid down their arms and made nice over the use and trademark of the DotA name. Valve will continue to use 'DotA' commercially under the arrangement, while Blizzard will be changing the name of their long-awaited Blizzard DotA to Blizzard All-Stars. Blizzard maintains the rights to non-commercial use of 'DotA' with regard to 'player-created maps'.

Blizzard All-Stars is a better name imo. I thought that the whole thing was about preventing the trademark of DOTA in the first place or was that accomplished with them getting the non-commercial rights to DOTA?

I read this as, Valve had more of a case, but offered a fair deal to Blizzard (WC3 DotA can stay as is)

Blizzard could of jumped on this years ago when the DOTA popularism reached fever levels. It's good they still have rights to all the previous DOTA content.

There are so many DOTA type games these days that I think playing DOTA 2 isn't as big as it use to be. Even Valve I believe are behind the game on this one and are on catch up.

Valves been known for picking up popular mods and giving them a good home I don't see this as any different. The company just seems to have a good eye for these things.

Cool. So now we have DOTA and BAllStars.

Both should be fun.

Dota 2 is going to be huge. It's in a 'closed beta' right now and it's got more players than any other game on steam. There's still people desperately trying to get a key to get into it.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a very large increase in number of steam subscribers when it's open to all.

yeah, they've done a fantastic job of it. I can't wait for them to get all the heroes in and the game to go live

How so? Feature complete wise it blows LoL away and it's clear if you play LoL and pay attention to the patch notes that they're playing catch up to Dota2 in many ways. The main thing I dislike about Dota2 feature wise is that they're practically copying the way the War3 engine worked.

Yes I really hope for the genre to move forward a little. I'm almost sick of the maps which are all just the same as they use to be in DOTA. I want map variety with the gameplay of DOTA.

Hehehe, you can abbreviate Blizzard All Stars to BAllS.

Dota2 is far behind on all fronts. IceFrog is just some basement kid turned internet star because he knew how to balance a mod. He tried to force all the limitations of the original dota into dota2 which has caused most people to leave the game.. even put on extra latency for everyone (although fixed now I think).

There was an estimated 20 million people playing Dota1 on WC3 in 2010 (http://www.playdota.com/forums/blog.php?b=892) Half of which are chinese. League of Legends has 32 million as of 2011. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a drop off in numbers in LoL when dota2 goes open / free to play.

Either way, it's great news for Valve. So many more people on steam means more potential customers.

Who are these people trying to get keys!? I have 5 that steam have just put in my gifts tab. I really think LoL and Dota are on 2 different sides of the moba genre. More likely see a reduction in HoN players to head over to dota rather than LoL
