GameStop to Sell Steam Vouchers In-Store?

Unread postby News Portal » 11 May 12, 10:24 am

In a move that many are widely interpreting as the admission of defeat, GameStop are rumoured to begin selling Steam vouchers in their brick-and-mortar retail stores. A source at Kotaku calls it "kind of a sensitive issue", which would be understandable given Gamestop's attempts to break into the digital market themselves through the acquisition of the Impulse service - an acquisition which has so far yielded little success. If the move bears fruit, it's something we could see moving down under into EB Games stores.

I hope these land in EB stores. I could get these as gifts for my brother (since I gave him a Steamworks title - Civilisation 5 - for Xmas last year).

I don't see these steam vouchers as a defeat really. Each store can only stock so many titles and by selling these vouchers in stores it allows gamers access to a larger library of titles.

Maybe in the future valve could allow stores such as gamestop etc to operate a digital store within steam. That probably doesn't make sense but it was a fleeting thought :P

The only way that could work is if ppl want to buy a physical retail copy, otherwise there's practically zero sense as both would be offering digital product and obviously if both are just digital product then the second store's point is moot.

But ppl who want physical retail copy through online means would've just go to any one of the MANY online store that sell and ships the copy to ur doorstep, so Gamestop would have to somehow compete with them pricewise... and if they want to do this through Steam then they'd have to pay Valve most likely if they cannot come to agreement that would benefit Valve. Between the two, the chance is miniscule to non existent considering the profit margin left out of it.

I would be curious to see how much these would cost in oz considering the Steam store operates in USD... Would we buy a AUD$50 voucher, or an USD$50 voucher for an exchange rate difference?

Since we're in Australia it's only fair we buy tokens redeemable for a single game instead of tokens that add dollars to our accounts. Each token should cost $99.95.
Let's not be greedy and go expecting anything cheaper. We need to be the good Aussies we are and continue paying more than everyone else.
