SW:TOR down 400,000 subscribers

Unread postby News Portal » 8 May 12, 2:12 pm

EA have revealed in their financial report that Star Wars: The Old Republic has lost 400,000 players, with the numbers dropping from 1.7 million active subscribers down to 1.3 million. There are new content packs, Legacy and Allies, that will make their way to us shortly, which developers hope will address the issue. Despite this, EA still reported a profit for the last financial year and say they will be investing heavily in next-generation consoles in the year to come.

It's not entirely surprising.

Game quality aside, many MMO players these days are transitory. There's a group of about several hundred thousand MMO players who go from game to game.

A problem with the sub model is it's fairly vulnerable to these trends.

Yeah, I think a lot of people will drop again when GW2 and D3 is released. I predicted it would be F2P within a year or two, maybe I'm not too far off.

This.

They need to do a lot more to keep subs. I am pleased with what they've done so far, but that doesn't take much since I'm a die hard Star Wars fan at heart. I've kept my sub since the US launch and I still play regularly, but unless they continue to deliver they'll eventually lose me, too.

Down to a mere 1.3mill subscribers. Clearly it's doomed. :dodgy:

The "Legacy" "content pack" was Update 1.2 and is therefore already released. Sounds like "Allies" will be next? I am intrigued.

But I still have 7 class quest lines to play through so I'm good for now. :)

Don't get me wrong, I'm still playing strong through the stories of each class, I haven't finished a single one yet and I'm seriously loving it. I know future content will be massive and they have big plans, I'm pretty damn excited for the future of TOR, I just hope they continue to deliver on the game, which honestly I have no doubt they'll do. :)

They announced in a Q&A that 1.3 contains the "group finder", and very little else so they can release it sooner. No ETA though.

Not that i think the game is out for the count but its not a particularly fun game to play and i don't see how these little content packs are going to revive it. Granted i burned through 2 and a bit class quests rather quick, there isn't that much to do.

For me, whenever I played this game despite being a die hard Star Wars fan, I would log in, play and instantly compare my experience with SW:TOR and SW:G. SW:TOR fell sooo far short it's not funny.

I love my MMO's and I'm one of those transition players that floats between MMOs. When I came across SW:G I stayed there through thick and thin, didn't swap, didn't change even through the NGE catastrophe. Since then no MMO will do, they're all rubbish in my opinion.

Still hanging for more bug fixes personally. Getting tired of experiencing some of the same ones I've been experiencing ever since I started playing.

Like companions not summoning before entering dialogue if you were riding a vehicle. Healer AI companions like Qyzen not targeting enemies and entering combat or targeting levitated/enemies mid-combat and just standing there instead of moving to a different target. Companions not re-summoning properly between transition points like elevators after reducing from a 4 man group to a 2 man group requiring you leave and restart the group. Travel to planet quests not updating if you ride in another players ship. Plus a few other rarer ones I've had.

I know there's bigger problems, but damn they're annoying :P

Yeah but if you look in the legacy options there are still a number of items listed as 'coming soon'.

MMOs need to reinvent. We keep seeing all these WoW clones with different skins. MMOs are not limited to this formula and some studio needs to take a risk and come up with something new. I doubt you'll ever see something as popular as WoW come along for a very long time. It was somewhat of a pioneer, and everyone jumped on it.

And before anyone pipes up, yes I know it wasn't the first MMO, but it was the first MMO to really appeal to the masses, why and how I don't know, but the numbers speak for themselves.

Like having full voice acting and a storyline with choices to make and...

Oh, nevermind. :58_124:
