Review: Risen 2: Dark Waters (PC)

Unread postby News Portal » 7 May 12, 2:17 pm

[app=8111]Risen 2: Dark Waters[/app] was supposed to fix the problems with the original, which nearly everybody agreed was painfully boring. Has it succeeded? Dylan Burns dons his pirate hat, swigs some rum, and steps onto the deck.

When I played the IGN Prime beta for this it was probably one of the top 5 most disappointing moments in my 20 years of gaming, after Risen been such a hidden gem and pleasant surprise to play I was really hoping that this would take what Risen did and take it to the next level... holy **** was I wrong. I knew it was still beta but with only a few months left on development I could easily enough see that there was no hope of them recovering to make a decent game.

"Maybe that was from the first game, which only seven people in the world managed to overcome complete and utter boredom in order to finish."

Ahh so I'm one of the lucky 7 :)

imo RISEN 1 was one of my favourite RPG's... played witcher 1 and 2, and I liked Risen 1 much much more...

There are only 5 other people in the world that finished it besides Yapa and me, I too liked Risen 1, not as much as witcher but it was still fun.

I played through Risen 1 last year, sunk heaps of hours into it & really enjoyed it actually, flaws & all. I've bought Risen 2 but haven't started it up yet.

I really enjoyed risen 1 aswell. Story wise gothic 2 and 1 were both better (marginally in gothic 1's case) but thats more a reflection on how good the story was in the earlier games which runs rings around both the elder scrolls games and the witcher games. combat was alot more fluid in risen than the earlier games.

I'm liking risen 2 once i worked out the graphics issues. It was unplayable until doing the two fixes for an nvidia card ( you both have to turn off all water reflections, and uninstall the "nvidia 3d" drivers which for some reason are called even if you dont have glasses and cause a massive slowdown - jumped from 10 fps to 70 once removed).

The combat systems fairly good (admittedly i went firearms, cause well theyre firearms :D - mele is a bit clunky at the start). You can buy a firearm right near the first town that does marginally less damage than the one you get as part of the plot further into the game so its good for ages.

The storys corny, but so are pirates in general, so it seems to work.
