GW2 Will Implement 'Home Server' Transfer Fee

Unread postby News Portal » 9 May 12, 1:26 pm

Guild Wars 2's lead designer Eric Flannum has revealed some more details about how the game will handle server transfers. Players will be asked to choose a Home Server, which determines where they will fight from in World vs. World battles, but will be allowed to play on any other server where they have a friend as a 'guest', for free.

ArenaNet will allow you to change your Home Server once every seven days by paying a fee, but changing Home Servers renders you ineligible for any World vs. World bonuses from the current match at the time of your transfer. Read more details over at PC Gamer.

I'm sure there'll be a lot of **** and moaning (isn't there always) but charging a fee to transfer Home Servers is a very good idea. Give people more of a stake in ensuring their World is competitive in WvWvW rather than having migratory flocks swapping between homes seeking an advantage and ensuring the balancing system can never hope to keep up.

And letting people hop on a different server as a Guest makes it easy for everyone to play with their friends in the regular content, even if their super serious WvW guild calls somewhere else home.

I've got no issue with that at all, it's a smart thing to do.

If going by the way they wanted transfers in the beta. (paying with gems)
It'll be even less of a hassle as you can use the in game gold to buy gems and then transfer when the 7 day limit is up.

probably should note on the article as well that while you can play on any server that your friend is on as a guest, iirc you cannot participate in his server's WvW for obvious reason.

No probs on my end with this! With the absence of sub fees Arenanet needs some kind of cashflow to fund running their servers.
The fact they're charging for something that really is non-essential isn't really an issue for most folk I'd like to think!

No problems with this as the game doesn't have a monthly sub. Also having this feature at release is still a one up on any MMO that has been released recently. SWTOR no transfers for a good 6 months, then another 3 after they announce and open oceanic servers? Good one...

I personally did 3 world transfers during the beta weekend and the system already works fairly smoothly, I had about 2 hours downtime before I could play in the new world. Honestly thou considering how quickly you get a community feel in GW2 I don't see that many people changing worlds randomly anyway, and I think their focus with this is to promote the competitive feel of GW2's WvWvW.

I do find this news to be rather curious thou as it's been about 3 weeks since they announced it would work this way.
