More Company of Heroes Details Due on May 7

Unread postby News Portal » 5 May 12, 11:26 am

THQ have started cranking up the media machine for the upcoming Company of Heroes 2, sending out a mock 1941 newspaper to some outlets including Kotaku. The headlines show Hitler beginning war on Russia, which coincidentally works well with PC Gamer's reiteration of the earlier-leaked facts that you will control the Russians fighting to repel the Nazis. And that there is snow, and a revamped cover system. THQ are going to make a lot of people very happy, come 2013.

The primary improvement to cover system that i will most appreciate is the infantry AI...

It's not difficult really, all i ask is that if we order infantries to take cover behind something, that they FOLLOW that damn order and do not leave it charging into the enemy because of their shorter weapon range and what not unless ordered to leave the cover.

and that they do NOT close their distance automatically to the enemy unless given the permission to do so (CoH AI have non existent behavior control mechanism) regardless if they are within effective weapon range or not.

if you love coh (which i do) check out the blitzkrieg mod. makes covers better, can hold positions, makes it a lot more real in general. (tanks can be killed one shot by another tank or at gun if its posistioned right, etc). but the mod does take a better coputer. it also has improved and bigger command trees and infantry/vehicle new unit :)

note that while Blitzkrieg does use the modified UI command that allows you to hold the position of the infantry, it is not immune to the infantry AI problem...

and since Blitzkrieg like many other mods that inject slightly more realism into the game also increases the squad size, the problem with the infantry AI tend to get magnified as well...

Blitzkrieg does however suffer from much less acute problem with infantry breaking formation and dragging rifle troops into SMG range, iirc they circumvent the problem by giving the same range for all the weapons that an infantry squad carry (with adjustment to their effectiveness over distance of course).

Still, it's probably as close as it gets to a well balanced mod that managed to get CoH more realistic and yet still fun.

The Blitzkreig mod is a very fun mod that improves balance imo as no longer can one unit take an insane amount of bullets before it gets killed (mortars and artillery are way more deadly which makes them vital).

I know that, i played Blitzkrieg for years now, up and down as the mod and others incorporated changes and new stuff the mod communities at relic's forum discovered and shared, and a few that were abandoned because it screwed other things (like the building rotation mod that screwed up the skirmish AI)

But Blitzkrieg does carry it's own share of problems, some of which come about due to the engine limitation and design (which was never designed for the kind of scale some mods including Blitzkrieg), others due to off balancing.

The artillery for example, mortar in particular, were at one point too strong...

i still remember the day when the self propelled mortar carriers were obliterating armored vehicles and tanks never mind infantries.

during that period, there wasn't a single field emplacement built in multiplayer because anything build on the field is promptly obliterated in seconds by the mortar salvos.

Then there was the time when flamethrower tanks were so ridiculously powerful and cost effective that no one expect infantries to be of any use at all in urban maps.

infantry were used early game, its like any strat tho, starcraft2 is a good one, you have lower units early and teir 2 later (tanks etc).

i dont think anything was too overpowered, i know some things felt so strong but everything has a counter, you cant do the same strat and win everytime thats for sure.

COH was good cus you had level ups and also upgrades, you could get mass inf and have sticky grens with some inf tank gun things with armor pierce rounds, could drop tanks in seconds.

maybe in 1v1 it could of been but in 2v2+ i thought u could get a good mix. you can get rolled in starcraft2 in 1v1 if you have the wrong build as well. thats strat games for ya. hence why i dont play them 1v1.

You missed the point, the CURRENT blitzkrieg already had the flamethrower tank nerfed... 2 or 3 version previous to that the flamethrower tank was so powerful against infantries that they can be thrown straight into the infantry defensive line and suicide and it would pay itself.

At one point it was so ridiculous that if the tank fired a single flame burst, whatever infantry clipped by the burst practically disintegrate or becomes combat ineffective instantly, including emplacement, bunker, etc... all of it just vanish if the tank gets into range (which was quite long back then) and burst them once. Since the flamethrower tanks typically can withstand at least 1 perfect hit from AT guns minus the 88mm, it basically guarantees that one flamethrower tank can fire at least one burst from it's projector before it dies against a defense line, and it would kill enough in that one burst on average to be worth the tank cost.

Then the nerf came and it's effective range was reduced among other things to prevent it from steam rolling defensive line alone, now it's still powerful against infantries but not as ludicrously strong as it was before.
