Unread postby News Portal » 28 Apr 12, 8:45 am

Portal 2's content/puzzle-creation kit, the appropriately-named "Perpetual Testing Initiative", has been announced for May 8. The DLC, which will be free for all Portal 2 owners, will come with an in-game puzzle maker and allow users to upload their creations to the Steam Workshop.

Like I said in the GD thread I hope this is a step towards a better and easier to use Source SDK and not just a Portal exclusive thing.

I think you'll probably find this is a Portal exclusive thing. From screenshots I've seen it's a fun little toy that anybody can use to make maps with, it's by no means meant to be even remotely a Source SDK replacement. Think kind of like the level editor that comes with the Timesplitters games instead, rather than a fully-fledged game-altering machine.

Yeah I know that's what this release is for but I can still hope they can use some of the lessons learnt here and apply it to the Source SDK.

On the upside I have heard you can export maps made with this editor and import them into Hammer for extra tweaks and whatnot. Not 100% certain of this fact, but if so, it could make life a little easier I guess...perhaps design here, import into hammer, fiddle, export into another game with that game's assets instead? Not sure how possible, and just designing from scratch in Hammer might be easier, but it's there.
