Cyptomnesia tends to be more an issue in music cases. Someone hears a song 20 years ago, then forgets about it, then composes the same thing because the song is in their subconscious.
It's not a huge issue for a popular, recent work like a video game.

It's fairly convoluted. The main point I wanted to give is that copyright has two sides. While it's good at stopping commercial exploitation, it can also give identity to things that most people might see as ripoffs.
