Australia Studio Closes Less Than a Year After Acquisition by RockYou

Unread postby News Portal » 17 Apr 12, 1:43 pm

Less than a year ago Brisbane game developers, 3 Blokes Studio, were acquired by social gaming developers RockYou. With RockYou having previously released female-oriented games, such as Zoo World, 3 Blokes studios, best known for their space-themed combat strategy game Galactic Allies, were brought in to draw the hardcore, male-oriented audience that RockYou felt it was lacking. Now, only 10 months later, they are being closed down. "The focus of our business has changed," Senior Vice President, Josh Grant, said to Inside Social Games. The parting was reportedly amicable, and 3 Blokes intends to keep making games under a new brand in the near future.

In japan at least, female oriented games are normal, no in fact they are SCARY big...

partly because of the ease in which they can be made, but the other part is because they are incredibly popular there too.

What year are you living in? Pretty sure Farmville is worth more than WoW was at its peak.

what has a games worth got to do with how 'hard core' it is?

Eve is far more 'hard core' then WoW ever was yet its no where near as valuable IP.

Farmville and angry birds will never be hardcore, period.

You know TRB, if you edit your opinion into Wikipedia it will look even more like facts.

So you're saying the people who spend 30+ hours a week in Farmville aren't hardcore gamers?

Hardcore has several meanings. Farmville is not a hardcore sim, but a person who games 30+ hours a week is a hardcore gamer, even if they're only in Farmville. But they're not a hardcore sim gamer.

No, for the same reason that someone who sits down for 30 hours a week isn't a hardcore sitter.

Sitting and playing farmville are both casual/social activities, neither one requires complete attention or dedicated focus.
If they did then they wouldn't be "social" games. [also known as casual games, because anyone can do it, its not hard and doesn't require any great degree of skill or ability]

There are a multitude of games that require a 'hardcore' level of dedication to be at the apex of competition, but just playing one of those games a lot does not put you into the hardcore category, in the same way a game having people play it a lot does not put it in the hardcore category.

Go ask people who play games at competition level if they think someone playing farmville is a hardcore gamer.
They'll probably laugh at you until they realise you're serious.
Its like comparing someone who's taken a first aid course to an EMT and saying "its the same thing, right?".

or comparing playing go fish to Texas hold-em poker.
Just because someone decides to play go fish a lot doesn't make it a hardcore game, where as by comparison poker is a hardcore card game.
It requires a certain level of skill and dedication to be good at.

By your theory nearly every MMO made is social/casual game.

So what you are saying is that this is your opinion and isn't actually reflected to situations other then yourself?

No, thats what you're saying.

I'm saying that it doesn't matter the length of time someone does something for, time is not the requisite factor for being hardcore.

There has not been a 'hardcore' MMORPG since EQ1 [and then only if you were a top end raider] and there has not been a hardcore MMOFPS since WWIIonline.

The whole point of recent MMOs is to dumb them down to WoWs level to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
