EA to Transform all of its Brands Into ''Online Universes''

Unread postby News Portal » 21 Apr 12, 11:52 am

EA's Northern Europe head Keith Ramsdale spoke in London yesterday about the company's plans to turn all of its brands into "online universes". This process has already begun with Mass Effect 3, whose ability to play the "brand" across multiple platforms (with the iOS companion apps) is similar to what EA is envisaging for all its titles, from FIFA to Need for Speed. Ramsdale used FIFA as an example, explaining how they'd like a player to be able to continually interact with the brand from smartphones, PC, tablets and consoles, all continually updating and reflecting their in-game choices.

The idea is actually pretty good, but am unsure if EA will pull it off.

Didn't they try this with BF3 already and have it blow up in their face?
DRM is like kids. The less you have, the better.

How about they just focus on making games people want to buy and play.

lol making games people want to play, haha it's "EA" :).... okok but I had to say it.

Anywho, isn't this cloud gaming thing already fallen over flat?. I know I dont want to have to always be connected to the internet to play game. All it sounds like benefiting is EA, because this means (if I have it right) is they will no longer have to create boxes, an DVDs etc etc etc, saving them money... forcing everyone to download constantly.

I remember reading something about microcrap or someone trying this idea an it was a joke. Now granted I dont allow EA software on my PC, hell I dont even torrent their **** because its generally substandard an well, yes its EA...
But it really does sound like a bad idea for anyone but the company.

Not only that, making games for tablets an phones etc, means they no longer have to make really big game's or in depth ones, they can just churn out more **** month by month. I may have it wrong but it soudns like ea just renaming something that has been shown to already be ****.

The idea works really well for iRacing. But so far they are the only people I know of that make it work.

How many times do they want people to pay for a game.

Agree with above about making my skin crawl. trying to mimick apple in brand loyalty is not going to work in the gaming space. gamers just value the games and the developers behind them, the distributors like EA just bankroll it and take their cut.

Making online components only make sense for games that are designed that way, EA sees it as a revenue stream and that is what they make, money. Hopefully they dont screw up the developers and games to much by forcing constraints on a product to match what they see as the best way to make money.

If Valve came out with something like this everyone would claim it to be "innovative" and a big step foward in the industry.
Steam: Shpleboy
Minecraft: LogicalHero
Battlefield 3: LogicalHero

This is a great idea, especially if they can get it to work between consoles and PC - being able to keep your "universe" data across every device would be brilliant.

Plus, honestly, why are people still complaining about needing an internet connection for their games? When do you not have a connection?
