NVidia Releases Beta GeForce Drivers, Claims Massive Skyrim

Skyrim players with GeForce cards may want to make their way over to Nvidia's site and grab the latest beta drivers. Nvidia are promising a 20% performance boost in Skyrim itself, as well as FXAA functionality which will allow you to force AA on any game through the Nvidia control panel, which Nvidia claims is "60% faster than 4xMSAA". The new drivers also include Adaptive V-Sync functionality, as well as touting game-specific performance improvements to StarCraft 2, Shogun 2, Batman: Arkham City, Bulletstorm, Civilization V and Just Cause 2.

Whenever NVidia claim these in my experience often it meant nothing but I have an AMD card now so I rely on my friends experiences now and he said the last driver boosted his skyrim performance by 30% and he has a 9800GTX I was quite suprised how well he can run the game now.

And here I am after installing my 7870 the game simply crashes on start up. Tried 12.2 and 12.3

Amd really need to get their **** together!

slight incorrection on the "enable FXAA on any game", its kinda like their SSAO injector, it only works on games they let you use it on. I wish they had used SMAA instead, FXAA gets too blurry sometimes (You know BF3 Post AA? Thats FXAA).


EDIT: Wait i got it wrong, you cant enable it if the game already has it, you can actually add it to games the CP doesn't detect :P

I think thats just the SMAA just doing every single edge it sees :P

oh and i found adaptive vsync, will give it a try today in BF3.

Not an edge blur, more like it takes a few pixels on a line an offsets them.

Adaptive Vsync is damn near useless.
Triple buffering stops the drop in half of your frame rate that double buffering does if it can not render at the Vsync refresh rate, but without the tearing.

The only use Adaptive Vsync would have is dropping Vsync if you go under 30 or 25 FPS to make sure that you would not have the frame lag of Triple buffering at the time when you most need low frame lag (at low FPS/high frame times).
Which sadly, it does not do.

Very keen for the full release. FXAA will be a godsend for games that can't do MSAA (a lot of them these days). And Adaptive Vsync sounds quite nice as I prefer to have VSync on, but does it do anything for input lag that sometimes happens for some games but not others for unknown reasons?

Ill wit for the WHQL version, though their last few drivers that claimed skyrim performance increases were amazing, i went from 80fps on gtx580 no mods to 120fps heavily modded not with these drivers, but their previous ones.

I'll be sticking with Nvidia for a while to come, their drivers are just less hassle then AMD's which ive had a gut full of.

Some people are having terrible stutter issues with vsync & adaptive vsync on with their GTX 680s, it seems to be a driver issue - the first driver that was released (300.x) works fine but after that there are problems. Someone with a 5xx series card says the stutter doesn't happen on his even with adaptive vsync so yep.

anyway, AMD aren't the only ones that can release a dodgy driver.

Tried these last night on my machine with BF3 and wow.. what a difference adaptive vsync makes for me!

My machine can usually hold 60fps and I have vsync on.

It does at times (say 30% of the time) drop below 60fps and is fine but I do notice very slight stutter compared to the silky smooth 60fps image.

I dont use tripple buffering because it would drop the fps to 30 if it cant do 60fps, and this is a big nono!

Now with adaptive vsync I get pretty much NO stuttering at all when the fps goes below 60. I never go below 40fps either though so not sure about systems that go lower than 40 or even 30... but for me this new adaptive vsync is a sure winner!

I played two rounds on caspian which is usually the map that drops to 60fps a bit, and it was very smooth and nice!

i primarily play tf2, would this have a positive effect for me do you think? i've got a mid range nvidia card, can't remember numbers.

Unlikely, TF2 is heavily CPU dependent, doesn't stress any half modern graphics card at all.

No it would not!
Triple buffering does not drop your frame rate! Double buffering does!
