I do not mind this kind of approach. They do good DLC, I do not see it being all that different from Diablo 2's expansion...

My greater concern lies with the pre-order bonus's and how you get them. The extra items are all extra in game content. Yet it is only available at certain retailers. Not even on steam. The cheapest price in Australia to pre-order with bonus is JB at $79. To compare that to Amazon (where you also get the pre-order bonus) USD$49 (AUD$48) and from the UK Amazon it was available for £26.85 (AUD$41). There are also shipping restrictions so we cannot ship them to Oz.

I know that this is standard practice. But I am tempted to get it from oz game shop so that I can save $40 and spend $10 of that on dlc when it comes down in price...

facts are still facts, this is done every day, because people will complain an still pay through the nose. Game makers know this, maybe one day you'll..... never mind, I am sure you'd love to ban me for what I really think....

Its a bit different to ME3.

1) Its not day 1. This would have to be the main point, it doesn't feel like they have removed something to make you cough up more cash.
2) Its available if you pre-order. I know the Prothean was in ME3 but only if you bought the more expensive editions of the game. I didn't see any caveats here.
3) The story in Borderlands was never character specific. This means when I finish it there will be a bit of a wait and then I can re-explore the game with an all new class. Sort of a bit of a refresher.

I bought some DLC for ME2, and regretted spending the cash.

Same cant be said for Borderlands DLC.

And what about the fact that free-to-play games are constantly growing and becoming a very viable business model? As far as I am concerned, any loss in value (which I don't personally see) is easily made up by the fact you can get many, high quality, free games.

Tas, every moderator on every forum is afraid of you for your amazing and radical ability to cut through the chaff, that plagues all the young kids these days, and get straight to the FACTS!

I doubt they'd expand it.

TBH i think it's a little tasteless to announce a class DLC this early, it's bound to get a negative reaction from the public as opposed to if they had waited till 2 months after release and then said "you know what guys, we had a 5th class planned but it wasn't viable at the time, we've finished it and if you want you can purchase it for another $5". The second way probably would have come off as a "nice guy" move by the dev rather than peeps crying now.

Facts??? I'm sorry, we are on the internet aren't we? ;)

This would've been a whole lot smarter move, the ranting would've been kept to a minumum, even if they kept your exact wording!

Uh .. whats the difference? They've said "we got this cool idea, haven't gone any further than that but we will once we've finished the actual game. we will probably release the character later as DLC. What do you think of the character? To our fans, if you pre-order you'll get it for free. Awesome ay?"

Or it could be, 2 months after the game "we made a character, here's some DLC. If you pre-ordered, its free. If not, bad luck? Who cares if you had no idea!"

As opposed to Bioware: "We designed and built this ages ago, please pay"

Announcing it now implies that the game will be unfinished when it's released, traditionally you keep your mouth shut about features that you can't (or don't want to) finish. Just like with day-1 paid DLC, announcing something like this early sucks, much better for them to have announced it later rather than give the impression they want us to pay twice for content that we should have got on launch.

I'm not a DLC fan, but this is my first time to think if content that is created together at time with the main content then it should be included. Not to resell as is easy to think the company simply greed.

Ahh, I remember the time when DLC used to be called 'expansion packs' and they were released on a disc 6-12 months after the main game was released.

I don't get what the big whinge is about a 5th DLC character. The main game already has four playable classes and missing out on the 5th character would in no way detract from the game itself. Hell, I only finished Borderlands with just two characters before deciding that replaying the same game with the rest of the characters was pointless.

I emphasise the point that as long as the main game provides a complete experience in itself, then IMO you are not being short-changed. Day one DLC does not necessarily equate to an incomplete main game !! Sure its a money grabbing exercise, but I don't necessarily see it as a forced rip-off.

And people seem to take for granted the fact that games have not risen in price over the last 20 years (I clearly remember buying Tie Fighter for $99) yet the cost of producing of them has risen significantly. In fact, it seems games have actually dropped a little in price.

The cost of producing games has risen sure, but so has the player base. Todays gamer population is probably double what it was a decade ago, inflation plays a part in the production cost increases but the devs also have a million more things to waste their money on now. Gone are the days when you pumped out a good game and the hype alone sold it, now they run multi million dollar advertising campaigns and have marketing consultants telling them just how far they can push it.

Pre-order: Get free character.
Don't Pre-order: Don't get free character.

How DARE you, Gearbox! How DARE you entice people into buying your product by giving them free content if they pre-order it. This isn't a business, it's a charity!

Idiots.

I was going to pre-order like usual anyway. Now i get a free character. Sweet.
