Sitrep: Appreciating the Drellguard

Unread postby News Portal » 4 Apr 12, 10:59 am

Like all of us, Toby wasn't expecting [app=7843]Mass Effect 3[/app]'s multiplayer mode to actually be a heap of on-the-side fun. Join ol' Triggerlegs as he dives into an ode to the much-maligned Drell Vanguard class.

Been having a good with the multiplayer myself. My usual crew and I have also developed a knack for changing every damn name into a moosh of two words or, at very least, include 'bro' somewhere. :D Brofiltrator is my favourite :P

I haven't unlocked the Drellguard yet but I've not been overly fussed as the abilities seemed to be a bit lacking compared to the Human and Asari. I'll now have to check it out.
The nice thing about the Asari Vanguard compared to the human is that its heavy melee is basically a Nova that doesn't deduct from your shields. This means that you can just bum around everywhere, charging at things, dropping your heavy melee and stealing everyones kills. :D

I'm glad to say you're quite wrong about the Drellguard being the only class that you can create your own biotic detonations with. The Drell Adept has Pull and Reave which, in that order, make a nice mess of anything without armour or shields.
The human Adept can also be quiet effective with pulling enemies from cover with Singularity and then sending off Warp or Shockwave. The cooldown is a major negative with that one, sadly.
I'm fairly sure it's possible with the Asari Adept too, using Status and Warp but I'm a bit unsure on that one.

Adept can use warp then throw, or stasis and throw/warp for biotic explosions. As well as singularity and warp etc. One of the sentinel characters can also do this.

While drell vanguard is pretty good, i still prefer one of the humans. My play style is usually just biotic charge in, shooting the knocked over enemy in front of you with the increased weapon damage until charge cools down and charge again to get full shields back. Also for large groups...charge, nova with what shields you have left, charge etc.

apart from how it handles host migration its a pretty cool multi-player.

I have a male vanguard and a krogan sentinel - only passed gold with my sentinel, once he starts punching things he cant stop.

I would, but then I didn't pay for the game because I didn't want to.

I had an asari adept in the beta and she absolutely rocked silver/gold purely because of stasis and that I took all the talents for bigger biotic bangs. Paired with a good vannie, you stasis a mob and they biotic charge... Big bang.

For banshee's/atlas... uses?/geth primes etc, warp/throw/biotic explosion rinse repeat while firing like crazy, you'll burn through then fast (even faster with someone with overload for clearing the shields).

Weapon? Phalanx pistol for the odd head shot clean up. 200% cast speed means warp/throw are on a sub 2 second CD, letting you spam like crazy and never needing CD reducing talents instead of raw frontloaded damage. Stasis bubbles for crowd control on silver/gold are almost mandatory.

Whatever you lose in raw kills you more than make up for in assists with all the biotic explosions going off. Survivability is still kinda meh (particularly since I pumped up damage as much as possible) but it's not a front line role.

Of course, the only two classes I have not unlocked atm are the krogan soldier and the... asari adept... /cry

Human adepts are the easiest/best for biotic explosion-y goodness. Singularity on anything without shields/barriers/armour will float them into the air, helpless, follow up with a Warp which automatically tracks their helpless, floating body.

And then BOOM!

Anything with shields/barriers/armour you spam warp/bullets on until it either dies or only has health left. Then singularity, warp, KABOOM.

If you have any other character with biotic abilities along for the ride it only gets that much sweeter as your singularities set things up for other people and your warps occasionally trigger explosions you didn't set up.
An adept with a wrecking ball vanguard clean up so well.

Looking forward to seeing what the next weekend Operation brings. It's nice having extra goals to shoot for. :)

As previous posters have said, the adept is capable of setting off his/her own biotic explosions. Singularity -> warp for unshielded/armoured and warp -> shockwave for armoured targets (2 hits a brute on silver!!).

Been having an absolute blast with 3 friends, hit gold up a few times so far buuuuut.... So far i have lost 17 crates (most spectre) to the wonderful programming skills incorporated into the store.... 5 games where the host has dropped in wave 10 on gold/silver and game is restarted on round 1. Too many games to count where some form of desync has happened and one or more of my mates have had to reconnect in order to be able to do damage to enemies and hence lose their credits and XP gain. The game has alot going for it and i'm enjoying it so much but when theres a disconnect, crates disappearing and just general crappy-ness i'd rather play starcraft with them (which has crashed/bugged out once in my entire playtime).

Hope other people are having more luck than me though as it is mad fun!

All of us as in GON staff? Or are you referring to all gamers?

If its the latter, not everyone was bemoaning the addition of co-op.

I played heaps of Human Adept in the demo but settled on the Krogan Sentinel Kroancha and the Salarain Engineer Salariancha. Engineer is actually stupid fun.

I'd have to say that Krogan Sentinel (with melee + health maxed) is my favourite so far. It's a smashing good time. I've also had a lot of fun with both Human and Quarian Engineers.

The Battlefield 3 Soldier was pretty dull. I was glad to get him promoted and sent off.

And now to go play as an Asari Vanguard like the lucky **** I am.

I was hosting a game and I quit just as my wife grabbed her own 99k Super Spectre pack. The store crashed out, took her money and didn't give her anything in return (that we can find!).

Goooood times!
