Notch Discusses Details for New Space Game, 0x10c

Unread postby News Portal » 4 Apr 12, 11:57 am

In the wee hours of this morning, Notch revealed the name of his new space sandbox trading game, 0x10c. Note that the 'c' is meant to be superscript so, 'to the power of c'. So far he's kept mum on the meaning of the cryptic title, calling it a riddle. Since then though, the game's website has gone live with a few more details about its backstory and ambitions: 0x10c is a hard sci-fi, spaceship-based game which centers around a fully-functioning, emulated 16-bit computer that you control. So there you go.

Sounds pretty interesting, and if comparisons to Elite are anything to go by, I'll be partaking (presuming the monthly cost is reasonable).

FYI Ox10^C is a hexadecimal number refering to the number of years the lost people have been asleep as a result of the bug.

In 1988, a brand new deep sleep cell was released, compatible with all popular 16 bit computers. Unfortunately, it used big endian, whereas the DCPU-16 specifications called for little endian. This led to a severe bug in the included drivers, causing a requested sleep of 0x0000 0000 0000 0001 years to last for 0x0001 0000 0000 0000 years.

0x10^C = 0x (meaning a hexadecimal number) 1,000,000,000,000 OR
0x0001 0000 0000 0000. I leave it to others to calculate the exact length of time that is.

Sounds good, but for me to pay monthly it needs to be great.

Hi, I'm Notch, and this is my new game. It's going to be a space game, and it's quite ambitious!

The game is still extremely early in development, but like we did with Minecraft, we expect to release it early and let the players help me shape the game as it grows.

The cost of the game is still undecided, but it's likely there will be a monthly fee for joining the Multiverse as we are going to emulate all computers and physics even when players aren't logged in. Single player won't have any recurring fees.

I Like that last part, if single player is convincing enough I 'may' get it for the multi-player or whatever it is, strongly leaning towards not though.
