Unread postby News Portal » 3 Apr 12, 10:56 am

On March 22nd Nvidia released their long-awaited flagship, the Kepler-touting GTX 680. Now the fastest single-GPU video card in production, the 680 competes closely with AMD’s HD 7970. But should you buy one yet, or hold off? Jason Imms looks at the evidence.

Short answer: NO.

Long answer: No because buying top of the line stuff is just throwing good money after bad.

better off waiting it out for the 7990 or the high end keplar in august imo. Ihad considered buying one, but i think i'll wait it out now. Maybe if they were $500 here instead of $700.

Personally, I'm waiting for the midrange cards to release.

History tells us when Nvidia release a supposedly fully awesome new GPU, it just seems to not seem that awesome.

Main reason for that I've seen is drivers. Give nvidia a few months to churn out some good drivers for this card then we may see a great performance increase.

People who buy new graphics cards when they've just come out are, frankly, insane.

The sweet spot at the moment is $200-$300.

Can people stop spreading the BS about VSync?
Triple buffered VSync will not cut your framerate to multiples of 2! and you don't get tearing, unlike "adaptive VSync"!

Double Buffered VSync is mainly only used in console games.

Shelling out for a new card not so bad when you think about the return on previously owned high end card.

In other words when your purchasing a new card, the card your replacing will sell in the midrange and not low end, granted you've gone with high end bits to begin with.

Eg I have a GTX580 UD, current going rate on ebay $350-$400, I would only have to shell out $200-250 for the 680. Food for thought.

Whats the point? nothing on the market needs that power atm.
I'm only using a 560TI and so far I haven't done anything where I've thought "oh I need to turn the graphics settings down".

I think it really depends on how games are running on the current system, as to whether or not you should feel compelled to purchase the next model. The only reason I have my current card (GTX570) is because my poor ol' 9800GTX died. Yes I did notice the performance boost afterwards, but honestly my computer was playing games fine beforehand anyways... <_<

I bought the GTX590 last October for the reasoning that I should be able skip a generation of cards before having to upgrade again. Looks like I'll get away it.

uh, no mention of the GK106 being used to power it and rumors of the GK108+ etc to be released later on in the year?

GTX 680 performs almost as well as the dual-GPU GTX 580

should be dual-GPU GTX 590...

it wasnt exactly just a die-shrink, the anand and guru3d reviews both mention the deliberate reduction of parts of the gpu used for compute, and the fact that the cuda cores on kepler far out weight those found on fermi...

$600 for low end cards also, if your looking for something top of the range add $50+, which is crazy since RRP from nvidia had it slated at the same price as current 580's...

It is an excellent product, but prices are way to crazy atm, await a response card from ati, but if your looking to sli 680's in the near future, it would be a good buy.

Also await for 3rd party configurations, its where these cards will shine.

Thought is was GK104 and that the GK110 initially intended for the high end GTX680 was delayed. Whether the delay is due to the GK104 being competitive to AMD's 79xx or whether there are die issues with the GK110 is yet to be known.

Personally if you aren't going to overclock the 680 is a great card, though overpriced over here. If you are overclocking, then power is usually irrelevant and the 7970 puts in a better showing across the board with the exception of Battlefield 3, especially at higher resolutions and definitely when it comes to multi-monitors.

I'm yet to see Nvidia's image quality beat AMD's since the 4xxx series.
