XBox 720: Details of the Next Generation Console Revealed

Unread postby News Portal » 3 Apr 12, 10:43 am

Despite reports to the contrary released only weeks ago, details of the XBox 720, the next generation console from Microsoft, have now been revealed. Said to include a built in Kinect, Blu-Ray player and two GPUs, the console has been confirmed for release around Christmas 2013. Unfortunately, it seems it will also require always-on connection to the internet as protection against piracy.

Was going to say this, but then I remembered I have a PC, so I wasn't going to buy it anyway.

Why would it matter unless you plan on going down the piracy road it shouldn't effect you in anyway.

I think the problem mainly comes from the fact that most people use their 360's and PS3's when they lose their internet on their PC's, I know I did nothing but jump on my 360 when I was waiting a month without internet.
Having to have an always on Internet connection takes that freedom away from it, how many people will go into the store and purchase one only to find they cannot use it because they don't have internet (probably not many these days) however the issue still remains.

I tend to jump on my 360 and play some SP games when I have to shut off my modem due to a storm. If an always-on connection is required, I won't be able to do that anymore.

When the net goes down at my place usually the power does aswell.

so i just go to watch TV, then realise that the powers out again and feel silly.

Then usually go to make food and realise the power is out.

then i just sit around and wait... sometimes i take a shower.

i like taking my xbox to the parents shack, which has no net access whatsoever. so that would become impossible. seems a bit silly to me.

I beg to differ. Remember that the most popular games on Xbox are multiplayer. You know, CoD, Halo, GoW, etc.

edit: I know ill be getting one of these. My ps3 lays there dormant and honestly I got it over the Xbox purely for gt5. Yeah, big mistake.

I was speaking from the perspective of a PC gamer first and console gamer only when needed, Multi-player games such as those you mentioned are popular but there will still be people that will only use their 360's when they have nothing else to do when their internet goes down other than jumping on some single player games.
I did that with my PS3, loved old school GT, GT5 just wasn't enough.

I know my brother would take his kids consoles with them when they went on holidays as an extra method of keeping the kids busy etc. Sounds like a stupid idea to need it to be always connected to the net. But then I doubt the new consoles are even aimed at kids these days.

I whole heartedly agree, my ps3 is essentially a media centre and boredom fixer when i can't be arsed with the PC.

Ill still likely trade my eleventy games and ps3 for the new Xbox.

I don't understand why they would want to remove convenience from a product that is popular precisely because of how convenient it is to use.
One more example of business types taking over from people who actually understand what they're doing?

I will probably end up contradicting myself and buying it also, however they better have backwards compatibility, otherwise my 70+ 360 games I have amassed over the years will be boxed or sold.
