Unread postby News Portal » 20 Mar 12, 1:22 pm

Screw free-to-play, it seems "pay-to-win" is where the real money is at. With over 20 million registered players, [app=6709]World of Tanks[/app] is not only one of the most played MMOs, but also one of the most profitable according Wargaming.net CEO Victor Kislyi, with the game generating "double digit" million dollar profits monthly.

Doesn't surprise me. I know I've spent ~$300 on TF2 because of microtransactions.. although that's not so much pay-to-win -_-

Also, my freebie little tanks were doing just fine when I used to play, don't know why you'd sink that much money into it :-s

WoT isn't totally pay to win. You can pay to get very tough tanks but they cost so much that most people wont find value in them. Sometimes you see one or two of these tough tanks and they do well but they still can be destroyed with a decent team.

Doesn't stop some ppl from time to time to shoot gold shells off...

it's very rare but i've seen an idiot actually firing HEAT shells from E2 105mm howitzer... on a pub match, not even a company battle (still stupid even for company battle)

and to correct that, you don't pay to get very tough tanks because premium tanks are not tougher than the equivalent tier, take Lowe for instance which essentially trades King Tiger's armor for better gun on T8 heavy, or KV-5, probably the worst T8 heavy tank thanks to it's low penetration gun and R2D2 weak spot that can be shot through by even a 76mm.

The single main exception to this is Type59 which is flat out better than other T8 medium tanks, and hence the MASSIVE complaint on it and why it was removed from store.

From what my clanmates tell me most of their gold goes to converting XP. Very few use gold ammo in pub battles since that is effectively throwing money away. Clan battles and tournaments however...

It is amusing to occasionally to see a new person who's spent a bunch of cash on a gold tank with gold ammo complaining about losing even though they spent money

I can't speak for others, but I support the games and game devs I like.
(Also spent a heap on TF2 items, a lot of them server gifts)

World of Tanks is great - probably spent less than $20 so far, and is most definitely not pay-to-win - you can have the same amount of fun and likelihood of winning in a free starter tank vs a $50 premium tank.

NOW PLAYING:
PC: Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning
360: Resonance Of Fate
PS3: Demon's Souls
IPOD: Army Of Darkness
SYSTEM: Intel i5 2500K | GTX 295 1792MB | 4GB Corsair XMS3 1600Mhz | Asus P8P67-M PRO | NZXT Trinity Case | 23" Samsung S2333W LCD

Holy **** I am just so thankful that I don't play this game, pay to win sounds hands down like the worst idea I have ever heard. I mean what they are saying is that WoF tournaments is pretty much a "who's daddy has deeper pockets" tournaments.

Well I guess its good for WoF that there are so many suckers out there, personally I wouldn't even play a pay to win game in my darkest nightmares.

Yeah but you don't see those $ being reinvested in the game...
It's all going on Warplanes and Battleships.

WoT is actually pay-to-win.

The 'gold' tanks are not the best and for clan wars if your clan is decent then they earn gold from holding territories which is then [usually] distributed to the members who can then spend it on consumables to give them an edge.

but you don't have to spend real money to win.

its more of a pay-to-take shortcuts.

you can pay for convenience.

thats pretty narrow minded

its free to play and if you play only pub matches you dont have to pay a cent
but you can if you wish

the gold system is pretty good
you can buy gold shells, they dont offer any extra damage per round, but give yah better penetration values, gold tanks , which as said already arent as good as their free to play tier equivilants, and premium account status which gives you 50% more experience / credits earnt per match plus gives you the chance to platoon up with 2 friends, 1 more than non premium account.
you can also use gold to convert experience earnt from elite tanks (fully upgraded) into free experience whch you can use on any tank to unlock upgrades/ new tanks. and thats it

also calling this game an MMO is not right its just a series of 15 vs 15 deathmatch / capture the base rounds (tho more game modes are coming)

I like the way they have handled the microtransactions in this game, you don't need to spend anything at all. But to progress quicker etc it helps. I have spent maybe $20 on this game, but have played it a lot more than I have other full priced AAA games, and I will probably spend more in future
