That Baldur’s Gate Countdown Explained: Enhanced Edition Confirmed

Unread postby News Portal » 16 Mar 12, 11:10 am

Yesterday some of us jettisoned our collective excrement over the mysterious Baldur’s Gate countdown that inexplicably took over the classic RPG’s homepage. What could it all mean? We speculated wildly. Some of us threw ourselves dramatically through windows, just because. No reason, really. Kind of excited. The countdown’s over, and here’s what it’s all about: Atari will be releasing Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition to stores, with Beamdog putting it out online.

hopefully all the original content will be there unchanged just.. improved (graphics and sound wise) apart from that i don't care what else they add to the game.

i remember playing through this game like 50 times as a kid. loved it!

It will be interesting to see how it appeals to gamers that missed out on the BG series, whether it holds up to modern games without nostalgia to benefit it.

BG2 enhanced edition also in the works! :D

Curious to see if these will utilize the 4th edition D&D rules.

I have a gut feeling the enhanced bit is a FPS in the style of might and magic lol

I don't think they'll use a 4E ruleset, that would mean a massive reworking of the game's internal logic and a re-balance of all the encounters!

That said, we may all be surprised.

While 4E rules appear to be massively more suited to ARPG video games (ie. Daggerdale, poor design notwithstanding; and the forthcoming Neverwinter MMO?), even more so than the already streamlined adapted 3.5E ruleset (as seen in DDO, NWN2)... I actually liked the 2nd edition rules used in BG - it just felt more like "real" D&D to this old-school gamer. Probably due to the fact that I haven't touched tabletop RPGing since the early 90s. :)

Horses for courses, of course, but changing the ruleset would play out completely differently, given the party dynamic changes.

I remember playing NWN the first time, picking up cloth robes and thinking "crikey these must be awesome robes! AC0? You can't be serious!" :O

Damn changes between D&D3 and AD&D2! :D

- We're going to fix the broken bits. (re: Multiplayer)
- We're 2D isometric all the way
- There will be two games. Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition and Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition (includes Throne of Bhaal expansion)
- Infinity Enhanced is based off the latest Throne of Bhall codebase
- Screenshots & other platforms: Same time, next week
- Beamdog exclusive on PC (uses Beamdog client, not Steam/Origin/GOG/etc).
- We're using the 2nd Edition D&D rules.
- Mods both current and future are important. More to come.
- Beamdog exclusive. As for other platforms, tune is same time next week hopefully with 100% less explosions
- Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition will include the Tales of the Sword Coast Expansion
- Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition is going to have new content for the game you love, made by some of the original team members

I'm not sure why they would shoot themselves in the foot like that.
I'm fine with my GamersGate and Gog DRM Free versions.
I would even be fine adding these to my several hundred steam game collection.

I'm not particularly interested in using yet another client based program that nobodies ever heard of before.
