Deus Ex Creator Mostly Impressed with Human Revolution

Unread postby News Portal » 19 Mar 12, 11:16 am

[app=3225]Deus Ex: Human Revolution[/app] is a great game. Whilst not without its rampantly publicised foibles – those boss battles didn’t bother me nearly as much as they seemed to bother 99% of everyone, though – it factored quite highly in many an end-of-year top 10 list. One guy who’s been conspicuously mum on the game is Warren Spector, the creator of the vaunted original Deus Ex. He broke his silence with GamesIndustry recently, and to the surprise of some, he’s come away incredibly impressed.

Would be nice to see him so candid about Invisible War, now that had me screaming at the monitor :P What stunk extra hard about it was that all the problems that were created for he "benefit" of IW ( ie simplification, engine "zone" restrictions) were transferred over to T:DS which remained a great game but only because of the story and that the Thief series was always about missions and not about free roaming inbetween.

Ah but I digress into rabid Thief fanboyism.

Tangent: I hope they don't stuff T4, really really hoping, love that series too much to see it destroyed.

Edit: I should add that I enjoyed DE: HR a lot, the boss battles jarred me hard and it was simply because you could go from super ghost techno-Garrett and suddenly just blunder into a room with a guy throwing grenades everywhere, kind of sucked for the player who was all auged for sneaking and spying.

Ready for this?

Invisible War was quite a good game. It's only major problem was that it was a sequel to Deus Ex.

Loved Human Revolution though! About time for a another run methinks.

For me it wasn't that it was a particularly bad game, it is as you surmise a (in my opinion) poor and lacking sequel to a fantastic and revered game, In Meji gamedom that is a punishable crime :P

When I look back on it all, if I saw that game back in the day and it wasn't labelled as DX or a "spiritual successor" (or whatever marketing run with nowdays), my opinion probably would of been the same o the game: I played it through, had some fun, had periods of no fun and felt a hollow gaming experience by the end. The story wasn't particularly grabbing, the combat was meh, the interface horribly consolised. It was a game I simply forgot about until DX:HR was first mentioned then I thought, oh yeah IW that's right!

Each to their own though, it's easy to criticise a new game in the series while looking back with rose-tinted glasses on the previous (ie like we DX fans did with IW :P )

I played this on my PC, just finished it the other day. I enjoyed it thoroughly, other than the 3 dodgy boss fights (last one was fine imo). Luckily you can basically cheat your way through those 3 fights with a little planning ahead and one of them with great ease.

Not the same as finding out Gunther or Anna's kill word and the surprising them by uttering a phrase and watching them explode.

Or just stealthing to avoid Simons first encounter or deliberately letting him go so you can finish him off later

I didn't mind Invisible War totally but at the end of the day it was no Vanilla DE, shared ammo etc noobing the game up for console release by removing the skill system ( one of the first true casualties of cross platform )

Really liked HR had a lot of fun, sure boss battles (explosive revolver FTW) but besides that its a really great game.
