John Romero Has “Plans” for a New Shooter

Unread postby News Portal » 12 Mar 12, 10:55 am

What a difference a tweet makes. You might remember John Romero from such bastions of FPS excellence as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, and er, Daikatana. We haven’t heard too much from Mr. Romero as of late, but when he was recently quizzed via Twitter as to whether he’d gone off developing shooters for good, he replied: “Definitely not! I have plans…” Immediately, gamingdom panicked. He’s making a sequel to Daikatana. Everyone, to the life rafts!

This must be another harbinger of the end of the world.

They did, but it was a different office.

Daikatana wasn't really as awful as most people make out, it was just painfully average in every way and a massive disappointment after all the hype and all the time it took. It's worth giving this article a read, it's really quite a fascinating read about pretty much everything that can go wrong with the development of a game. Massively optimistic development timelines, enormous team of inexperienced staff, engine switches leading to almost a complete restart of the project, PR disasters (see the image in the article) and a full-scale mutiny among the development staff. After all that happened in that time, it's amazing that the game even made it onto the shelves.

I'm still a big fan of Romero and his career, even if he pretty much disappeared from the spotlight completely after the Daikatana debacle. Can't help but like the guy. I'd love to see what he could do with an FPS after learning his lessons from his Ion Storm days. People still give him a lot of ****, but let's not forget he WAS a big part of Doom and Quake's development, and really, I think he's got a good potential to sit in with the likes of Warren Spector and Tim Schafer as real anomalies in the industry.

EDIT: What? They censor the word '****' here?

I cant tell what that word is.
Anyway John romeros contributions to games is good but it remains to be seen whether he can make a successful new shooter in this day and age. If he makes a true to doom/quake then it will probably sell well especially with the hardcore PC gamers (like me).

I'm interested in seeing what he comes up with.

I don't remember the single player much, but I did spend quite a few hours playing deathmatch Daikatana at a few LANs, wasn't spectacular but it was fun

It's generally okay. Much more fun in co-op because you don't have AI sidekicks to worry about.

He's always had his locks.

And no, he's absolutely ruled out Daikatana 2 on twitter.

I'd guess it would've been way off the cards anyways after the reception Daikatana 1 received overall.

Oh and Daikatana 2 mod for Doom 3:
