It's a big new year, and Big Huge Games and 38 Studios are launching a big new IP: the [app=7414]Kingdoms of Amalur[/app], a sweeping fantasy epic supported by big names like R.A. Salvatore and Todd McFarlane. Does it live up to its promise? Tim straps on his helmet to find out.

It's not that bad! I think the unfortunate reality is that it's just not going to be for everyone and/or not what they were expecting. Fans of RPG's will probably find something to enjoy, it's just a shame that the full package is not as good as it could have been :)

the world seemed dead to me, like there was no "life" in it. and it was too cartoony.

"Too cartoony" is subjective naturally, but I definitely agree that the world lacks life. It really feels like an MMO in that regard too, sadly.

It's not a bad game it reminds me of WOW/Rifts crossed with a D&D style adventure which you can play by yourself without subscription and online servers.

The combat is a lot of fun and so far the story seems interesting, although I seem to be caught in a flood of side quests but they have been ok so far.

Its a shame it does not have party co-op, that could have been a lot of fun, make a party and adventure through the game like a D&D group.

Once I plugged in my controller on the PC I fell in love. I easily grow bored with the constant talky-talk in fantasy RPG's (but in Witcher and Mass Effect I listen to every line). I quite like running around, killing things, picking up things... in a game this big I am not going to sit still to hear the story (just like in Skyrim).

I liked it so much I grabbed it for Xbox today so I can get some G out of the 50 or so hours I'll spend in it.

I hate the way you use bows in the game yuk! Which makes the finesse side of things useless to me. The sorcery and might especially are certainly awesome to use in combat however...

I actually quite like the bow system and not having to lug heaps of arrows around :)

Definitely agree that this is a game for controllers though. Absolutely.

I'm really liking the game, I don't have much free time and this game doesn't feel like it's wasting my time. I can fast travel and leveling up is pretty stress free because i know i can rewrite my fate (re-spec) witch includes changing class if i like. The combat is fun and feels like skill makes a difference unlike final fantasy style combat.

I'm only lvl 5 but i can see myself playing this game for a long time.

Very consoley. Very. It *breathes* like it.

I'm still stuck on mouse, just to move the screen around, but that aside, it's begging for PC enthusiasts to be turned off by design.

I'm in two HUGE minds with it. It's a combination LOVE and HATE that I haven't experienced since Dead Island. Mind you, my LOVE/HATE with that is somewhat different conceptually, just the same in intense extremes.

Having said that, let me say this .. much cheaper on PC.

One problem i forgot to mention is the lack of camera zoom, I hope they patch it in because the camera is way too close in and really makes the game hard to play at first.

Unless you want to play with a controller... which you don't have.
