Exclusive Guild Wars 2 Class Info: The Mesmer Returns

Unread postby News Portal » 15 Dec 11, 12:28 am

Here at games.on.net we're positively wetting ourselves in anticipation of [app=6096]Guild Wars 2[/app], and our poor bladder control has been rewarded with this exclusive interview with ArenaNet's Jon Peters, Game Designer on GW2. The final class for their upcoming MMO has been revealed, and it is of course the fan favourite Memser, returning from Guild Wars 1 with a whole new style.

:love-struck: Mesmer! :love-struck:

Fan favourite though? Really? I rarely came across other mesmers anywhere near as much as the other classes.

I loved playing the mesmer in GW, it was always so fun just shutting down enemies healers and spell casters. Setting up lose lose situations where if they cast, they take damage, but if they don't cast after a certain time...they take damage ahaha. The fun of them was the fact the enemy killed themselves hahah. It sucks that it looks like they missed this play style in GW2 :( I am happy my favourite class is back, just won't be the same though...

They still allow for that style of play going by the guildwars2.com description of them.

Confused Condition

The mesmer introduces a new condition to our set called confusion. An enemy with confusion on them takes damage each time they activate a skill. This condition stacks in intensity, so the more confusion an enemy has, the greater the damage.

It's certainly a different profession than the Mesmer we already knew but the potentional for driving your opponents insane is still there. This is my favourite bit from the profession page:

For example, a mesmer equipped with a sword has two clone-summoning skills: Leap, which launches him forward, leaving a clone at his location, and Illusionary Leap, which summons a clone at his location that then jumps forward.

Definitely the profession of choice for me

I think the Mesmer is more important to people who have played Guild Wars 1 than to people new to the game looking in. Anyone who has played GW1 knows how much of an utter utter utter prick Mesmer’s were if you were a monk or caster and they had built around shutting you down. I still have nightmares.

Looks like they're going in a very different direction than GW1 though. Looks like most of the skills which were just suggested are a lot more visual now.

The skill videos were leaked 2 days early and gon chose not to break the embargo. Kudos to gon. I'm sure ArenaNet will reward the more responsible vendors in the future :)

Traditionally though mesmer was a relatively difficult class to play (which is why there are not too many mesmer in GW1), anyone can hit their buttons with decent timing with some practice and drill on what skill to shutdown and when or who to shutdown... but doing it in actual fight like tournaments, massed PvP or even dungeon/realm PvE where things tend to be really chaotic was another matter entirely.

They also tend to be the most focused class, a lot of the mesmer i see are specifically designed by their player to shutdown one class (usually the monk or the mage) to the exclusion of all else.

Fun to play yeah, not exactly easy though..

Aww damn, now I HAVE to get GW2. Mesmer is teh pwn.

Also after watching and reading the article it seems the new Mesmer is essentially a Mesmer/Ritualist *shrugs*
