Hands-On: Battlefield 3 Single-Player

Unread postby News Portal » 16 Sep 11, 1:34 pm

Wandering the halls of the Tokyo Game Show, Nick Winter barged into the Electronic Arts booth and demanded to go hands-on with the single-player of [app=5812]Battlefield 3[/app] and, fortunately, they were only too happy to oblige. Read on for the full impressions...

nice, i liked your honesty at the end there nick.
made me think about the game a bit more rationally instead of fanboyfrothilly.
hopefully, the scale of destruction will play a much larger part in the SP than "blow a hole in this building here"

according to that rooftop sniper mission, it probably will :P

edit:
though yes, BF3 is designed more for multiplayer - and in terms of a game narrative, i'm expecting nothing more interesting than your average CoD romp. afterall, the bc2 single player was...well, just plain shithouse. dont get me wrong, i love the game and have played it since release but...
DICE couldnt write a good story if it came up and propositioned them with an offer they couldnt refuse.

but yea, nice reportingsmanship.
Without my pants.

"Was it awesome? Yes. Was it an improvement? Absolutely. But was it... revolutionary?"

errr....perhaps they should chuck you an M16, some kevlar and a ticket to Afghanistan...THEN you'll get something revolutionary!

As long as the graphics are good (playable), maps are well designed, kits are balanced and we have desctructible environments - its a winner!!

I don't understand why EVERY single reviewer who writes anything up on BF3 even bothers to lend the campaign any of their thoughts. Its all about multiplayer... ITS BATTLEFIELD.

On the topic of the campaign anyway - how are you support to make a modern 'military sim' feel shooter revolutionary? You can't! There's a pretty set parameter in which you have to operate in.

I hope to hell DICE have spent sweet bugger all time on the AI and invested it instead in making the multiplayer experience amazing instead.

Its BF. Analyzing the campaign is a waste of time.

I watched shaky cam footage of BF3's SP @ TGS, and there were parts where the AI was doing some stupid things so I guess your wish is answered.

don't get me wrong i dont want them to make a bad game in that respect... but AI scripting isn't exactly a small job - I'd rather the core of the game be where it's at.

The first Bad Company had an excellent and enjoyable SP campaign. BC2, while much shorter, was also a stack of fun. I don't mind that it has a story at all. I have complete faith in DICE to deliver the best multiplayer shooter experience the world has ever seen come October... and I've got the PC that can run it right in front of me...

Because it does have a campaign? Have you considered that this may be the reason why they give the campaign thought? It is part of the game.

Nice opinion of Battlefield.

My opinion of such is that single player is worth as much time as the multilayer. SP is great fun, I don't know why so many people knock it.

1942 didn't even have singleplayer...

There isn't much more you can do with the war-themed fps any more.

AI is on the top of my list of things that need to be perfect. Give me last year's graphics and animation that is akin to rag-doll epilepsy, give me it all, just do skimp on the AI.

Just saying…

I still havent even touched the single player campaign of Bad company 2

BF is all about the MP, i'm sure some people enjoy the SP though.

90% of the games replayability comes from MP, so 90% of the resources should go to the MP imo.

BF3 will be all about MP :2gunsfiring_v1:

Who can honestly say they have spend any considerable amount of time on SP in BF2 or BC??
