Unread postby News Portal » 7 Mar 11, 11:37 am

Now that the Steam Guard is in beta - read more about that in James' article here - people like Gabe Newell are hitting the virtual streets to challenge you to break and enter their virtual houses. Want to know Gabe Newell's login details? I've very rudely hidden them after the jump.

it's probably just a fake account made for testing this. I'd say if someone does manage to get in then they know they still got things to work on

So basiclly it just locks it to that computer?

What if you're computer dies?

I don't see what is so amazing about "Steam Guard"?

Indeed - a great way to challenge the security of your system.

Then you authorise another one using a validation code that gets sent to your registered email address. You can then choose to deauthorise every other computer from using your account.

Really? I can give you my username and password (as Gabe did) and you still wouldn't be able use/steal/hijack my Steam account. This will completely render phishing attempts useless.

Sounds pretty amazing to me.

Have you got a source? I heard someone else say that but couldn't verify it, so I went with the all-lowercase spelling. If you can find something I'll update the article, cheers!

Watch the video you linked with the article perhaps? You can actually see it on the powerpoint slide in the video preview image!

I wouldn't and perhaps you wouldn't either, but recovering hijacked/phished Steam accounts is (was? ;)) one of the most prevalent issues Steam support deals with.

anything that stops someone hijacking or stealing an account, whether it is mine or someone elses, is a win in my book.

EDIT: if anyone has enough friends on steam would notice that from time to time one person gets attacked and then everyone in a steam group does, and often they nab at least 3 people, simply clicking a link is enough and if this stops that then it will be worth it.

You've never swapped accounts with a mate to play games you don't own yourself?
