My understanding was that the reason fan's arent making maps like these already was because blizzard reneged and didnt realease heaps of promised functionality to the supplied map editor, and currently its even missing functionality that the war3 editor had.

The creators of my favorite war3 maps arent porting them for that reason.
(like swat aftermath - awesome http://redscull.com/swat/readmeafter.html)

Its pretty piss to chop the community off at the knees, and then release a bunch of mods that people would already be making if they could just to brag about it.

It'll be interesting to see if the dota map is decent, but judging from the sc2 efforts so far I won't be holding my breath.

Can map designers actually upload their maps for all to see yet? Or do Blizzard still only show the 'most popular' maps that pretty much keeps all the newly released ones hidden from general view?

I know a lot of people lost interest a few months back because it was just too hard to get their maps into the public eye. Nobody wants to make a map that won't even be seen, let alone played.

About all I've heard on this front is blizzard saying that they'll have some 'promoted' maps that are shown at the top of the popular list. Which won't really change much for most mappers.

This is probably the biggest thing killing the custom map scene, along with the nonsensical region locking of custom maps. Half of the maps in the first page of the popular list have been there since release.

So sad to hear given the success of their previous map editors. I really don't understand why Blizzard haven't taken any notice of it this time around. Clearly it kept the non-pro/competitive side of Starcraft/Warcraft 3 going on for years and was the main attraction to Starcraft 2 from a lot of old (and now disappointed) SC and WC3 fans.

I thought Blizzard were supposed to be on the ball with design choices and longevity of their games. :?

Seems kinda silly to say this is what this very powerful editor is capable of when these features are not included in the public editor.

perhaps that's part of the goal?

to ensure the success of these 'exclusive' mods without the possibility that some dastardly unscrupulous random internet may produce one similar to it using the editor before they release their version?

we all know after all that when given powerful editor the heinous denizen of the internet can produce some impressive work, can't have them snubbing the ones marked by blizzard oh no.... can't have that.
