EVE Online - 45,000 gamers take on space at once

Space-simulating MMO EVE Online has heralded in the new year by claiming a major milestone - more than 45,000 players online, playing the game at the same time.

The new Peak Concurrent User record (45,186 gamers, to be precise) comes five years into the game's history, and follows several 'tremendous' serverside changes to the EVE infrastructure.

And in case you were wondering that means 45k players on the one server cluster with no sharding or instances. This means you can interact with anyone in the game.

Fights between larger fleets are now measured in 500+ players per side.

Another temptation to return and see what all the fuss is about.
500 v 500 is pretty cool, much better than the days of 30 v 30 and massive, 10 minute module lag and 1 fps. :<

I tried Eve and it wasn't really my sort of game, but that is a great achievement. It's great to see an MMO that isn't in the Everquest mould do well.

Accounts don't get deleted afaik, only made inactive.

Struggling between WoW and this for my MMO fun. Just bought BC for WoW so feel the need to get my money's worth.. EVE was very confusing to start out but after playing through Dead Space I'm hungry for a space-themed game to get my teeth into.

I really want it to be EVE.

Maybe I'll wait to hit 70 in WoW first... the only reason I went with WoW was because I could get into it straight away, it's relatively simple in design. EVE just has such a brutal learning curve.
