Prince of Persia is one of the first "PC" games I can remember playing, back on my cousin's old monochrome monitor one summer. Apparently, in the many years that have passed since, our regal friend has experienced several makeovers, now arriving at his current incarnation for next-gen platforms, in his new self-titled game from Ubisoft.

Matt Keller headed off to the desert to hang out with the Prince and his new friend Elika, to check out how well the pair are suited to today's hectic lifestyle. Is this one old favourite that's worth dusting off again?

So many reviews mention the lack of challenge... personally it didn't bother me one bit. I tend to play games for enjoyment, not e-peen reasons and (as mentioned in the review), the game flows marvelously. Nothing more annoying than getting "stuck" in a game due to arbitrary difficult sections.

I'm all for more games like this - it will be one of the most memorable titles of 2008 for me.

+1 completely agree, my feelings exactly, I especially liked when I fought and you could just make up combination's and it always looked awesome


were we playing the same game? those QTE's drove me insane, though I guess it's better with a 360 controller as the button will be colour coded, I was playing my friends PC version with kwyboard/mouse

and why does everyone hate Warrior Within? tbh Sands of Time is probably my least favorite game of that trilogy due to the poor combat system, I much preferred the darker tone of warrior within as well and thought it was the best overall game, Two Thrones was good as well though the combat seemed to have dropped (though you did get dark prince) and the chariot segments weren't as astounding as the Dahaka chase sequences

warrior within lacked the prince's witty personality or the princess...

instead it's replaced by the eternally brooding prince and a lot of grey and dark places.

now personally i don't think there's anything wrong with that, but i can see why ppl prefer sands of time, sands of time also had a more interesting places to explore with bright color palette and gold laden castle. If there's one thing i cannot stand from warriors within, it's going across yet another set of platform jumping with grey stones, and equally grey and dark walls...

Isnt it better that Elika saves you from a miss timed leap rather than the usual death animation -> reload at last save point? Imagine what Sands of Time would have been like without the dagger of time.

I know the new Prince is funny and witty but I don't remember the Sands one being so, he just seemed like a goody 2 shoes


exactly, it's not a case of it being too easy or lacking challenge it's more to do with the game being very forgiving, going back to the last platform saves you trudging yet again through all the obstacles just because you mucked up the timing of that very last jump (drives me insane when other games make you waste 5+ mins going through it all again )

and with boss battles if you 'die' they regain tons of health so basically it's no different except you don't waste time going through loadtimes etc

hahahahaa... well i suppose if u can call han solo a goody 2 shoes then he does fit the bill.

it was a long time ago that I played it but all I remember of him is he being the 'good' guy, always trying to fix things, trying to please his father at the beginning, sometimes giving a grim and somber narration of wherever he was, no witty remarks, no being rude to be funny, no nothing, just being perfectly good

Warrior Within tried to be too GRIMDARK.

well sands of time prince had him being a han solo kind of good guy, yeah he is a good guy... but he also make fun of the princess once in a while and it's amusing.

fast forward to warrior within and we get mr anakin skywalker, ok he's not that bad... but both are equally brooding.

to be perfectly honest, after trying all prince of persia... including the odd prince of persia 3D back a long time ago... i think it's come to the point that ubisoft and whoever is in charge for prince of persia... have completely forgotten what made prince of persia sands of time a refreshing and fun game in the line of prince of persia since the original.

warrior within is like an experimentation from them to make the prince a bit more serious, but it seriously fall flat and uninspiring not to mention the environment fails to encourage me to explore it... then in 3 they tried again and tweak him further but it still didn't feel right, more like they tried to fix the crayon painting in 2 and then smudge it with cloth... and with this latest one i feel that they really ought to just remove the prince of persia title altogether because it seems to me that it can probably be a decent game all on it's own but they also tried to tie it with prince of persia and it doesn't click.
