Left 4 Dead (PC Review)

One of the surprise hits of 2008 was Valve's zombie-hunter, Left 4 Dead. This one sort of snuck up on many gamers, shambling into view in the last part of the year. It set out to redefine online co-op gaming, and - from what this newsbot hears - may well have achieved their goals, with gamers around the world logging in to step into the shoes of one of four 'lucky' survivors.

Matt Keller recently pulled on just those boots, and took a walk around Turtle Rock's version of zombie-filled reality. What did he think about it? Check his review!

Good review - I would give it four stars as well - removed one for the shitty server interface.

hope they support this game like their others, there was a statement somewhere about new weapons / campaigns & even boss zombies so should be great

most fun i had in a game for ages

Have been playing L4D since the first day the demo was released. It's the best online co-op player game I have seen in ages. My suggestion is to get hold of a copy it's well worth the $

Valve actually bought Turtle Rock studio who are the devs for L4D and use the Valve name for their release.

The games does need a few more maps and more importantly more maps opened up to Versus. It Does not need more guns. You're not playing as soldiers, it's civilians escaping a zombie infested city.

An interesting review of a game that didn't sneak up on people. :roll:

wasn't really a surpise as L4D was heavily advertised, especially in the U.S (subway stations had them too). Good review and pretty much spot on. The game ain't perfect but is indeed easily enjoyable.

How about melée weapons? Surely there'd be a chainsaw on Blood Harvest somewhere...

Heh a melee weapon would have been fun. So many times i'm surrounded by zombies and the guns just aren't working. Wish I had a chainsaw or a lawnmower strapped to my chest :lol:

I think this game is lacking some replayability. I've finished it with my mates on hard. We tried expert for a few hours - it was too tough. But now that its over, its over. Versus mode wasn't fun. There's nothing else to the game. Doesn't seem worth the $80 or so bucks (although it may be cheaper now).

I'd give it 3.5/5. 4/5 if valve releases some free new maps.

Beating L4D on expert isn't impossible, and will provide much more of a challenge (and therefore enjoyment imo) for you and your friends.

Versus can be fun, but can also be poop depending on both teams.

Rushing teams is no fun unless you can get a smoker on the tail of the survivors.

This is the only game i have that NEEDS to be played with friends to be good.

He might've meant surprising that it was SUCH a hit... or maybe it was just surprising to him how good it was?

Agreed that more weapons would take away some of the rationing feel that is essential in a survival game like this. If anything, a bunch of M16's (or M4's, whatever they are) and automatic shotguns lying around every few blocks is too easy. Finding pistols in peoples bedside drawers and stuff would've made a bit more crazy, but probably at the expense of fun.

Either way, if you haven't played the game yet, pull yer thumb out and kgo!

Valve always had a big hand in left 4 dead as soon as they stepped on board they pushed the game back a year turtle rock may have of started left 4 dead and was there idear but valve had a big part of it

No doubt it would've been a very different result had Valve not been involved. Worked out great, regardless :thumbs_up:
