Technically a prequel to the original Command & Conquer, the first Red Alert release was met with such a positive response that the spin-off alternate history now has as many titles as the original RTS storyline.

The latest on this branch of the family tree is Red Alert 3 - and fortunately, our intrepid reviewer UgLyPuNk was not among the gamers who had to guess the game key following a printing mishap, but that doesn't mean his playing experience was without drama.

It felt too much like C&C 3...didn't have that retro feel like the Red Alert series should.

Not a bad game imo. I like the japanese though, they can expand faster but the cost is a fair bit more. Mecha-Tengu ftw! XD

I have to agree with Ralph. It's so much like C&C:3 (which I was disappointed with), and although some elements from RA2 still stand out (the Kong Burger shops, and some sound effects), it's feeling less like the 'good old' Red Alert games.

The same issue of problematic connectability with online games killed Tiberium Wars & Kanes Wrath with me, so hopefully by the time I've played RA3 enough, it won't be a case of de ja vu.

With all that said, I still appreciate the game, the corny cut-scenes, and the the more than pleasant female cast.

Edit: Also in reference to "feeling less like the 'good old' Red Alert games" - I guess in many ways that's bound to happen as they move to 3D. After all, it's not like they're going to just keep using sprites etc forever.
