While sometimes, all game developers need is a good idea, more often than not, that good idea needs to be backed up with some solid grounding, perhaps some detailed characters, an in-depth storyline, and some great gameplay mechanics to offset their innovation.

If you'd like to see what happens if you don't put in that little extra effort, maybe you should read Matt Keller's review of Fracture, a new one from LucasArts which illustrates that a good game is not made from one simple idea.

some dev never seems to realize that relying on a single mechanic doesn't save ur game from poor gameplay.

Do you mean as in Lucasarts making a game in-house without input from anywhere else? If that's the case, they haven't made an 'independent' game I don't think since the late 90's. Most games since 2000+ have been in collaboration with other studios. Which explains why there hasn't been a decent Lucasarts game in years.

I dunno, I kinda feel like the Star Wars franchise is dying on it's arse, and that every new thing they bring out seems to be a desperate attempt to grab every last dollar out of the most die-hard fans. Believe me, I used to be one, but even I feel nothing will ever be as good as the days of Xwing, Tie Fighter, Jedi Knight2. And unfortunately that era has to compete with the 'prequel' timeframe, which IMO is decidedly inferior.

Yeah bet you're really regretting saying the Adventure Game genre is dead now aren't you. Serves you fsck right.

I say let them burn in hell, let anyone develop starwars games, because LucasArts is dead and is never coming back. And if it does it'll be because either George Lucas is dead or he sold the company.

KOTOR online may actually destroy the starwars game franchise if it fails.

@ A few in this thread, what did you guys find wrong with Star Wars Force Unleashed? I'm finding it quite the fun little game and interesting story line, and the upgrade and lightsaber aspects is a nice touch IMO, keeps people playing differently.

unleashed was only good because it was outsourced to a competent developer. LucasArts sucks as a developer.

Ive found it a little crappy & boring I played like 2 levels then went off to do something else since I was so bored with it, and I normally LOVE starwars games.. for some reason this oen did not do it for me

Yeah, bring out another tie fighter or xwing game! A game JUST dedicated to flying. I remember spending endless hours on that game when I was younger. It never got old, even if sometimes I was just aimlessly flying and killing

Yodas stories. Makes me laugh now.

Yoda Stories is a great game. Its more detailed than what most people think. You eventually level up and get all kinds of new quests. Same with the Indiana Jones Adventures.

I agree. I only ever got to play the demo of each of them. But I enjoyed them a lot.

I specially tracked down a copy of Yoda Stories, I have it and its brilliant. It shits all over Pokemon You could say it was one of the first true Casual video games as it was marketed as one.
