So the Max Payne movie is out now, and it sucks. Hard. I don’t think I’ve actually paid money to see such a bad film at the cinema before. While it seemed like the style of the game would lend itself well to the medium of film, one doesn’t have to look too hard to find the elements which made the project go off course. So this week, The Warp Pipe is going to break down the elements which make these movies crap, and pinpoint why these projects almost always go wrong.

I didn't mind the Tomb Raider movies - didn't feel that they departed too much from the originals (given the lack of major storyline as you point out) and were reasonable light entertainment.

The Hitman movie wasn't bad either, IMO. Even my wife found it quite enjoyable and she's not a gamer.

Doesn't pay to overanalyse fluff flicks - high expectations lead to disappointment

I enjoyed both Hitman (That Russian chick was FTW) and Behind Enemy Lines.

The second Final Fantasy movie, Advent Children was pretty awesome, Though I'm not sure how closely it relates to the game.

And yeah, The Bioshock movie sounds interesting, I'm not very far in to the game itself but it seems as though any sort of human contact dies just as I reach them? Am I full of bad luck or what :[

I can watch the first Tomb Raider movie without flinching too much. The second one however was just embarrassing. It was like "let's do several dozen stunt sequences, tie them together with this plot I wrote on the back of this postage stamp and then stick the 'Tomb Raider' license on it, that should keep people happy!"

Actually I didn't mind the Max Payne movie too much either. The game, on the other hand, was the most repetitive annoying stinking pile of garbage ever produced, and can't understand why people like it. The formula was essentially "jump sideways in slo-mo shooting badguys" repeated over and over again, with annoying comic book sequences slotted in for good measure.

Ah well, the combat was repetative (Although most FPS games could fall under the same roof anyways, but thats a different story) but the story, and the way they told it was excellent.

I really liked the Hitman movie.

Haven't seen the Max Payne movie yet - probably tonight, however there really wasn't anything special about the Max Payne game from a storyline perspective. Generally games have pretty weak/one-dimensional storylines at the best of times, so obviously the Max Payne game stood out as they at least tried to capture some of the noir aspects of great Hollywood films of the past... but at the end of the day, it was still just generic Hollywood noir.

It's like that Pirates adult film - it won a shitload of awards because they attempted to add some sort of semi-coherant storyline to a porno. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Max Payne games, but the storyline didn't make me think I was watching The Maltese Falcon or something.

Going back to the film - if you can't adapt generic Hollywood noir from the game to a generic Hollywood noir film, you fail... epically.

The movie industry is jealous of games taking people's time and money away from movies and so is attempting to destroy game franchises one-by-one with terrible movie adaptations.

Games are experiences more than stories, as long as they have fun and innovative gameplay they can succeed with even the most generic placeholder story imaginable.

The upcoming Bioshock movie sounds promising

directed by the Gore verbinski (Pirates of the caribbean) and produced by the guy who did 300. The movie will have heavy CG like 300 to render the scenes of rapture

you could just about make a movie out of mass effect imho.

a very hate filled rant like Warp Pipe this week, I didn't like it much, didn't even touch on the good game based movie, FF7:AC, and FYI I very much liked FF:TSW, and I don't think you can argue that it had little to do with the games seeing as every game has a different setting and story

though I find that these movies fall into 2 categories either a) they just plain suck (DOA) or b) they're decent action flicks but have almost nothing to do with the game (Hitman, Doom)

and I don't support them btw I've seen Hitman, Doom, both Tomb Raiders (the first one was watchable though I was ticked off when the robot didn't get up and kick butt during the castle scene ), DOA and both FF movies and probably something else, of which i've only paid for FF:TSW (have it on DVD) and i'd get FF7:AC but I don't see the point as I don't own the game (maybe if they remake it )

I really don't care if a move departs hugely from a game's original plot and premise. Reinterpreting IPs for different media isn't a sin; Japanese IP do it all the time, so that the manga, anime, drama series, novels and games ALL have different forms, riffing on the same characters and themes. Often this is just awesome; examples include Revolutionary Girl Utena series/manga/movie, the many reinterpretations of Evangelion. Personally I found the movie Resident Evil universe somewhat more compelling than Capcom's efforts.

The fact that a movie doesn't replicate the game seems an odd reaosn to pan it. If the film was exactly the same as the game, you'd find yourself thoroughly, thoroughly bored. Ninety minutes straight of watching someone else play without giving you a go makes you realise how intrinsic being in control is to enjoying the experience (something people with partners who are strangely disinterested in admiring their elite skills would do well to remember). This is an especially pertinent point for those who complain about the number and length of cut scenes in games like MGS and FF...

Arguments about whether films are good are not often just degrade into pointless flamebates. The whole thing is so completely subjective.
