As much as we talk about one game or another being "eagerly anticipated", few titles have really deserved that label as much as Will Wright's Spore. Hyped up for years, the life-creating sim is now here, in our hot little hands, and we finally get the chance to play with evolution itself.

But the drama starts the moment the box is opened - were Maxis too ambitious? Did they 'dumb down' the game to make it more accessible? Good review. I put SPORE down a while ago. It's just not that good.

I really like the creative parts of the game where your making your creature, buildings and vehicles. The actual game play bored the hell out of me.

Atomic gave it 65% in the latest issue, which is pretty much in line with this review.

I couldn't agree more with your review. It was a fun game for a while, especially when building the creature, but when you actually have to play through the different stages it got very repetitive and boring.

I suppose it's aimed purely at non (and casual) gamers, which I guess is why my sister is having so much fun with my copy.

It's Doom 3 all over again, somebody creates a visually impressive and technologically innovative engine, now we just have to wait until somebody makes a game with it.

looks like I'll be waiting till this comes free with pizza then. I want to play it but at the same time what I've been hearing is its fun but nothing groundbreaking like expected so when its price comes down I'll probably pick up a copy.

Game is pig-disgusting. Particularly the Tribal and Civilization phases. Absolutely no depth, it's even more horrible when you notice that the way you design your buildings and vehicles offer no gameplay impact (well, the vehicles have stats, but the game doesn't respond to how you build them... whether or not you put a gun on the front or a gun on the back doesn't change how it fires).

for all you creators out there...

While playing the game, press [Ctrl] + [Shift] + C to display the console window and enter
freedom [on or off]

and that will disable the complexity limits in the creators.

creatures that do break the limits will not be shared with others.

I've uninstalled this game after 2-3 hours of play lol.

the game was awesome until 2 hours into the space age, you can't get anything done. Fly to planet, 5 messages come up, go fight off pirates and help an ecosystem, go repair, fly to another planet and repeat...times infinity, it never stops

Agree with the review, and with most people here. I'm an avid gamer, so for me Spore was a tad bit too light on gameplay. After a total of about ~10 hours, it gets boring. Haven't touched it since.

I'm sure quite a number of people would find the creation tools fun, and most casual (non-casual?) gamers may find the game interesting. I think though that if you're here reading the forums on GON, you won't be in the non-casual/casual gamer group.

5/10 for me.

Gave up during the Tribal Stage - seemed really repetitive and boring.
