Day 1: 48hr Games Design Comp - 8 hours in!

It's Day 1 here at the IGDA 48 hour games competiton. It's been about 8 hours since we have been given our three key words. I must admit that on hearing the key words, I was surprised at how different they each are. The three magical words that will determine our games are: Watermelon, astronaut and summertime.

It's hard to think how a game could be made from those words, but as soon as we heard them all the teams went to work. Some teams pitched in an idea together, some teams broke down the concepts, others (like mine) decided to come up with our own ideas, pitch them to the rest of the team and combine them.

Main character is an eight(ish) year old boy/girl, who is playing "astronaut" in his backyard. Game play is set in half reality, half imagination. Theme the graphic elements to that "summertime holidays feel" you have when you're a kid, mixed with the "i'm an astronaut, exploring the universe" imaginary game.

Watermelons? Easy. Helmet and hit points. Every astronaut needs a space helmet, so the use of a quickly carved watermelon is visually fun and effective. In addition, your watermelon helmet can only take so many hits until it cracks - and you have to go back to base (ie the porch) to get another watermelon.

See I reckon that using the astronaut as the main character would be the obvious choice. I'd be tempted to use the watermelon

Timmy has been pretty secretive with his ideas, what I've gathered so far, is you're a farmer-astronaut and you can pick up and then drop watermelons, which slowly increase in size over time.

steal the apple ideas from crash bandicoot but make them watermelons instead

We need to make a working demo/prototype in 48 hours
using all our own work

He is pretty close

We have a cool idea and I cant wait to show you (if we ever get it working)
However I havent slept yet (woke up 10/11am Friday, got to comp 2pm, started 4pm) and I dont look like stopping yet

I also however coped a virus off the network here and killed my laptop (someone opened full sharing)
