Whether or not you liked Doom 3 the engine which drove the game was excellent. Doom 3 provided gamers with one the opportunity to actually see how effective light and shadow could be used in a game. Released before Half Life 2 the Doom 3 engine beat Valve to the crunch and provided id with some necessary kudos which showed that they were a "next generation" force to be reckoned with. Doom 3 was released in 2004 and it's engine has been used to drive a number of releases in past years, including Quake 4 and Prey. It has been officially announced today that John Carmack is working on a new engine.

Well seeing as Quake wars has been hyped and anticipated so much, id software can only have a positive future in the next year or so.

More than a few people probably think that Cry Engine 2 would be the be all and end all of next generation engines.

Be interesting to see how Carmack tops that one.

That's been said about many engines this generation. I'm more interested to see what the IP iD are working on rather than the technology. With iD at the helm, the artwork and engine technology are bound to be good. However, it will be interesting to see if iD can break the mold gameplaywise and prove they can make a good game instead of just another pretty "tech demo" like previous efforts.

Carmack has always been a fan of OpenGL (which is a good thing as it provides Mac and Linux users with games as the API is open to all operating systems) supporting Direct X means that your games are basically for Xbox or Vista or some other Microsoft product, oh PS3 also uses OpenGL.

Let's hope the Kronos group are successful in giving big old MS a run for their money.

This will be something good to look forward to.
Cry Engine 2, meh there's too much hype about it and i personally have lost all interest in that, sure it might look good but have a look at Farcry and Doom 3

Id's new engine will probably be putting the ball right back in the same kinda park as those two games.

It will all come down to a matter of opinion on which one you like more.

I'm looking forward to seeing what OpenGL3 is going to bring, both from a open source, and a multiple platform aspect as well.

Bring it on people, lets show the MS fanbois that life exists outside the MS kool-aid.

I've always reckoned iD as an artist exploiting technology rather than an engineer using technology, as I picture Crytek.

New engine, sweet.

Hopefully it won't be long before they release the Doom 3 engine for free (like their previous engines), which means free, standalone mods!
